Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi all,

I’m not feeling great today, so maybe that’s why I’m not feeling too positive. But does anyone feel like they always end up with bunnies with health issues?! I’m very aware they’re hard to look after, and very high maintenance.

But my first had a respiratory issue, a piece of hay stuck down his throat which needed surgery, and then died of EC. This was within 6 months of getting him.

Zigs is now 12, and I’m lucky to have him, but has respiratory issues and arthritis. And is under the care of the RVS. He requires lots of care now, but he’s rather old

Winnie my other bunny, has an extremely rare and ongoing eye issue, that took 3 opthalmogists to treat, and now needs to be referred to the RVS for some mysterious skin and fur loss issues!

Can someone tell me I’m not alone?!

You're not alone. I bet if you got everyone to write a list of everybun they ever owned & what took them at what age you'd see a whole lot of heartache. As with people some bunnies seem really resilient & rarely need vets / drs, others the opposite, most inbetween
I like to compare rabbits & people. So for a human of Zigs comparable age - 108! - it'd be incredible if he didn't have arthritis & other health issues. You're doing an amazing job caring for him in his old age but I know how exhausting / overwhelming it can get...especially if companion bunny not 100% healthy too.

Its only really Joey out of all my bunnies that lived a long & healthy life (til his cancer) . Most have had weirdo conditions & ongoing stuff . When I had my trio I did have a few years when my trio were ALL pretty stress free. Like each had a few vet trips for minor things but nothing ongoing that needed much treatment. Then Boobly went dental, Mouse went wonky & I adopted a rabbit with advanced kidney disease

You are not alone. It can be disheartening when we try so hard to give them healthy diets and lifestyles, yet they still need a lot of hands on and vet care.
