  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit barely eating

vet called. Lola is slightly less stressed and is drinking plenty water. She's taken some recovery food ( whatever that is ) and has eaten some Kale which we left with them ( she adores Kale). She's produced one tiny poo this morning. Fingers and toes crossed. Thanks

That sounds like a good update:) Recovery food is a mixture made up of powder and water, which is given by syringe to the rabbit. It is much like softened pellets, but with additional supportive nutrients. Most rabbits dislike the flavour  It is commonly given to rabbits, who are not eating sufficiently by themselves. As it contains plenty of fibre, it will assist in getting her digestive system back to normal.

It is good that she is drinking. Fluids are helpful in cases of Stasis, so much so that some vets will provide additional fluids by injection.

I hope you hear soon that she is producing more output :) Sending her lots of positive recovery vibes.

Quick update from vet. Lola is quite lively this evening and is both eating and drinking well. She is receiving injections to stimulate the gut and also to reduce any inflammation and pain relief. She is also receiving recovery food, also something called Fiberplex?? Only one tiny dropping today so heres hoping she moves something soon. glucose test shows theres no blockage so we don't know whats causing this. The vet says it could be anything including stress. She received her booster jags 2 weeks ago.
She's in for another night so I may have to remortgage the house!! We can only keep hoping. thanks for everyones wishes

I'm pleased to read that she's making progress. Fiberplex is a fibre-rich paste, which should help get her digestive system back to normal.

Sending her lots more vibes.

The updates seem hopeful! Hope Lola is soon able to come home. Fibreplex should help stimulate output. Waiting for the first post stasis poops is an anxious time but hopefully they will pop out overnight.

We are beyond heartbroken .
Lola's condition deteriorated rapidly this morning and we have taken the decision to let her go to sleep.
She stopped eating and drinking and was getting more distressed each time the vet tried to handle her. Her weight has also dropped rapidly. A glucose test showed no blockages but we will likely never know the underlying reason . We take some comfort from the 5 years we had her as she was a beautiful Dutch with lovely black and white markings. She loved our company and being petted. She really was the pampered Queen of the family.
Thank you to everyone who has offered kind words and support.

I am so very sorry to hear the sad news. As you say, it's heart breaking when this happens.

Well she now rests in our garden where she played. Looks like cancer was the cause of her illness. We couldn't do any more really.
Thank you all for your kindness.
