Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pro-biotics when on antibiotics?

My bunny has had snuffles and is on 7 days of antibiotics. The only way I can get him to take the Baytril is on a bit of banana, but I know he shouldn’t have too much fruit. So because of the sugar in the fruit, and the antibiotics I was wondering whether he should have probiotics? It seems like rabbit digestion is a pretty fine balanced thing.

Hmm.. I use probiotics after antibiotics, but there are those on the forum who do not use it and think that it is unnecessary. It's all a matter of preference. But it was the banana subject that really got me thinking. Giving bananas every day is too risky for me, he eats more fruit than him should. I think you should give him the vegetables he likes or give him pellets instead?

I wouldn't worry about the banana tbh, 7 days of daily banana isn't a huge deal imo! If that's how he happily takes it then carry on [emoji38]

Probiotics are a weird one, my exotic vet thinks they're pointless as they could never survive in the rabbits harsh stomach etc to make a difference so don't really have any benefits. People seem to have varying views for bunnies and pro/prebiotics. You can though if you want to, but I'd stay away from the ones you mix into their water, it just makes their water sugary tasting then you might have trouble getting them to drink normal water afterwards [emoji38]
