Pip had diarrhoea...

Livi

Alpha Buck
I had a poorly Pip yesterday when I got home from work :(

She had diarrhoea , she has been so good & only really uses her tray recently so when I came home and saw a few splats downstairs, and some scattered upstairs I knew something was wrong (well I knew it was wrong just by the fact it was runny anyway). Quickly got her out, disinfected & cleaned the whole hutch.

Took her into the garage, and washed her the best I could (she had poo all over her ears, feet etc and caked in her fur :( poor Pip). I got as much as I could off – but she began to get extremely stressed so in the end I let her back into her hutch, confident she would wash her self to help finish it off, and she did.

Put her back in and normal poo resumed, and she spent a long time washing herself. Checked on her throughout the eve and she seemed fine. She only has Hay & pellets, plus lots of fresh water.

We think we know the cause, a friend of ours got her some ‘natural’ yoghurt treats which my sister gave her a few of (about 1-2 days ago) and I think that the ingredients teamed with the hot weather have just got on top of her. Obviously she wont be allowed any treats & has a strict diet of hay & pellets for now! No more of those treats, but we did get a really good treat basket (one of them willow basket ones), ill give some of that to her once she is totally clear of this.

She is far better now and I would go as far as to say 99% back to normal, but she was a little quiet this morning when I went out – but I think that was more aimed toward me as if to say nooo don’t pick me up & try to bath me again, as in the end she gave in & came over for a nice big fuss!
She had been drinking, using the tray and all poo’s were clean ones, and I saw her tucking right into the pellets and having some hay. Will keep a very close eye on todays water intake, but I have a syringe which I will give her some water with at lunch time if I am concerned she isn’t drinking enough. I may even pop to the vets after work to see if I can get any electrolytes, hydration fluids to top up her water so she gets maximum benefit.

I spoke to our vet yesterday as soon as I had cleaned the hutch & Pip, they advised me to keep a very close eye on her over the evening & night, checking for any further loose stools, and to take her in asap this morning if still bad. Luckily she has been fine & my vets been great, he specialises in little bunnies & looks after my poorly cat so well for us.

I am at work today – but can pop home around 12.40ish to check on her for half hour or so and just see how she is getting on, and if I think she still needs a little help may give her another wash.

My fly netting only arrived yesterday & I am still wondering how I will affix it to her hutch – so currently she has no netting, which is obviously a concern – but she has no wet really obvious mucky poo at the moment – thankfully, her hutch is spotless and I am keeping a close eye on her & checking for any fly eggs etc.

Is there anything I can do to try and safe guard her/give her to get her energy levels up & balance in her tummy & insides back to normal? Other than obviously keeping a close eye on her, making sure she has plenty of water & only has hay/pellets to eat – and her hutch is kept clean/and she is as clean as possible.

Anyone else experienced similar? xxx

My two have had runnier poops lately and I'm sure it's the weather. I've cut out veg and they only have a small amount of pellets but masses of hay and grass all day in the run for them. Their runny poops have cleared up fine now (thankfully). As long as you keep the hutch really very clean flies shouldn't be a problem (but keep checking them daily for any eggs), try spraying on the hutch some fly repelliant, I get mine from a horse equipment shop and it not only smells lovely but really does keep the flies away too. You can also use some fly tapes too as these always work well:wave:

Thank you for that :)

Pip is booked to go for a once over this evening at 6.20…..cant help worrying so rather be safe than sorry. I am about 80% sure they will say she is fine, just a little quiet after yesterdays tummy bug, and maybe a bit cautious when I go near her that I will try bathing her again!

Its her first time at our ‘proper’ vets, as she has had part 1 of her vaccine at P@H as they offered a Free Health Check there anyway so it made sense to just make one trip & get that done there & then (I didn’t realise at the time I would need to take her back 2 weeks later – but never mind – its done now!).

Luckily our vet is a specialist when it comes to rabbits etc & they have been fantastic in caring for my elderly lady Kimba (cat) who has quite a few problems.

So fingers crossed all is well & little Pip gets a clean bill of health, I also bought some electrolyte powder from them to add to her water. x

Pip got the all clear, although the vet did say she is very watery inside - but seems 100% fine so nothing to worry about. He also gave me some electrolytes, plus a special formula to syringe feed her if her stools become loose again.

We have kept her on just pellets and hay - which she is eating, she is also drinking well & seems fine in herself. Most of her poos are fine - but there was one little splat last night & another this morning - but certainly not like her diorhea she initially had.

Does the above sound ok? My vet is a rabbit specialist so I want to trust what he says but am stilla bit concerned one or two of her stools have been loose....and that he said she is still a bit watery inside? Do you think he may have had a feel which has promoted the last few squelchy ones to come through? and that I shouldnt worry?

If you're still a bit worried, you could always try just phoning your vet to see if its normal for the odd poo to be runny still. He might advise you to give her the formula he sent you home with, or at least put your mind at rest!

Hope Pip stays well xx
