The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Metacam causing diarrhoea

Bunmum0

New Kit
Hi there I'm wondering if anyone has this happen to there bunny.
My 8 year old male rabbit Merlin just had some surgery to flush his bladder and he's been put on metacam , he seems to get really wet sticky dhioree poos .
Has any had this happen too?

I haven’t known metacam cause diarrhoea, perhaps it’s the upset of the operation? When was the bladder flush? Is he a good hay eater? Does he eat a lot of pellets and or veg at all?

I agree with Zoobec - I have not known metacam to cause dairrhoea. I would check his diet - restrict pellets and greens (especially ones he's not used to) until he is better, then gradually re-introduce them. Hay is safe and full of coarse fibre to help his gut get back to normal. If he doesn't improve today, I would contact your vet again for advice.

Sometimes it can cause an upset tummy, but as Zoobec says it could also be due to the surgery. I would ask the Vet for some fibreplex, I think you may also be able to buy it online without prescription it's a paste given in measured segments orally, and helps to support normal gut flow.

Hope Merlins feeling better very soon. x

In dogs and Cats it can cause diarrhoea, but personally I have never known it to do so in Rabbits. Soft, wet unformed poo can occur for 24-48 hours after a GA. Is your Rabbit on antibiotics and if so which one. Getting Bunny to eat as much hay and drink as much water as possible should help. If you can access any bramble leaves they would be good to feed him too. As bunniemum has suggested, you could also give him some fibreplex

You may be able to by fibreplex from a vet (I did) as its OTC it doesn't need a prescription. I hope your rabbit recovers completely soon

It is usually A LOT more expensive buying it from a Vet than buying online. Double the price sometimes

Yeah I can imagine. I think it was £12 quid & Rudey just spat it out anyway. Sometimes its good to have an option to get your mitts on something really quickly though

We were told just last week by our vet, that metacam can cause upset tummys (our Henry has had runny poops for last couple of weeks and the vet did indicate that this could be due to metacam). Henry hasn't had runny poops for the last few days as we stopped the small dose of metacam so it may be a casue.
