  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Just got back from the vets, Can someone explain this to me.

Yes he is having a dental on Monday, she did say that if he seemed to stop eating at all to bring him in and she would do a dental for me as an emergency

Perhaps the vet didnt think fluids were needed at the time? :?

Yes the vet did mention about fluids but didnt want to put him on an IV unless he got worse and she thinks it is early signs of statis. He is not in a full blown stasis as he is still eating a drinking. Most of what he is on is precationary I think apart from the painkillers and Xeno.

Fluids are administered as an injection under the skin along with gut motility in Stasis sometimes with painkillers, or Metacam to take away, I think your right, she is thinking ahead and it's preventative rather than curative.

Fluids can be administered IV to rabbits too, via and ear vein, but only when dehydration is severe as the catheters are hard to place and rabbits often try to remove them as they are heavy and irritating in their ear, especially for up-eared bunnies.

As said before, loxicom is the same drug as metacam. Very few medicines are licenced for rabbits but many dog/cat medicines are used as there are no alternatives. So the vet has to ask your permission to use a drug "off licence" as there is an increased risk of an adverse drug reaction.

As with the baytril, if you are not sure do ask your vet - they will prefer that you fully understand the treatment plan than go home clueless and not sure why you are administering various drugs.

Yes I'm not disputing that I was just advising the OP that the normal treatment with fluids in early stasis is via injection. Thanks anyway

It all sounds precautionary to me the baytril sounds like its because he's had snuffels and it'll also cover any secondary infections before his dental.
Loxicom is just metacam and will ease the pain of the early stasis and if he has any pain associated with his teeth it'll help then to. Loxicom is quite safe to use in rabbits although carries the same risks as in cats and dogs however some vets don't prescribe adequate pain relief as the doses seem a bit high so it sounds like you have a reasonably savvy vet

Thank you for all your advice, has really helped me understand. With my previous rabbits I was very lucky and only went to the vets for jabs so im in new teritory for me.
