  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

John-Joe - U/D 25th April

It is lovely that you know your bunnies so well and could tell he needed care so quickly.
Mine also like to worry me in the middle of the night, so both sorry for you and glad for JJ that you were still awake. Sending lots of vibes he continues to improve and he remains well for a long time.

So pleased to hear he's responding to your loving care. He's so fortunate to have you watching over him. I, too, wish you were able to get the rest you need to care for yourself. ((((((Huge hugs))))))) xxxxx

JJ found collapsed at about 2am

Severe abdominal pain and shock

On all treatment and fluids

Currently ‘critical’

Vibes please

No no no....come on John-Joe, please, please get better. We love you, little man. 😥💔

Prayers, vibes and anything else that will help bring him through this on the way forthwith. And massive hugs for you, Jane. xxxxx

Thank you everyone, your support is much appreciated. In the last couple of hours JJ has shown a very slight improvement in that he is now able to maintain his body temperature. His blood glucose has gone down from 18 to 11. He remains anorexic, but he has passed a few soft blobs of poo and a few hard pinhead poos. His stomach is no longer dilated and he has a few tinkling gut sounds.

He can now have a few small syringe feeds of Emeraid Intensive Care, which he is taking well. He’s on all the relevant meds and fluids.

He is not out of the woods yet, but I don’t feel as hopeless as I did earlier. Finding him collapsed and cold, with a very slow heart rate convinced me he was about to die. I found him in this state at 2am, he had been fine just after midnight. But this is how it always seems to go with his chronic gut problem. He is in heavy moult at the moment. I thought that I was doing everything possible to minimise the risk of him becoming unwell again. Obviously it wasn’t enough.
