Hutch questions post#8, help please!

I think I have settled on having a wendyhouse conversion as our bunny home...the husband and I spent ages last night looking through different options and i think we might have settled on this so...

Would 4x4ft be ok for two bunnies? We dont have a huge garden and we do have children so we need to reserve some space for their gumf

We were looking at this one~
http://www.playhousesworld.co.uk/p/4ft_x_4ft_(1.24m_x_1.38m)_Small_Childrens_Playhouse.htm

Or this one~
http://www.shedsworld.co.uk/p/Rowlinson_4ft_x_4ft_(1.25m_x_1.18m)_Little_Lodge_Playhouse.htm

Or this sort of thing~

Obviously we would make levels inside...my DIY skills arnt amazing so i was thinking of a little table or two to make a second level? Adding ladders/ramps etc

How big a run would i need to attach to that to make it ok for them? Does the run have to be on a hard base or can it be on the grass? Is there anyway to make it escape proof/safe for them? I think im going to struggle for space to have a run attatched on hard stuff and then a seperate run for them on the grass so im trying to work out how best i can use the space available! Our whole garden is currently grass...
Any recomendations for makes/places to buy runs?
How do you attatch the run to the side of the house? am thinking cat flap inside the little house but do all runs come with doors on the side?

Would i need to take ALL the windows out for ventilation or just some? I realise I will have to cover them all with fox proof wire. By the time we are ready for the bunnies to come home to use we will be heading for the cooler weather...

How many bolts would i need on that door? top, middle and bottom?

What to do about the door? Im thinking i need something becuase i dont want them to run out when i open the door? Was wondering about building a little gate/fence (wooden frame all covered with the wire) to make a little 'front garden' to the house and so that gate would be shut when we opened the front door?

Im so sorry, i think your going to be sick of all my questions by the time im done!! Im brimming with ideas!!

Oh and last of all...how can i resist the urge of the rabbits needing homes section?? I keep seeing gorgeous rabbits needing homes and i wish wish wish we were ready now :( but i dont want to rush into it and i want to take time getting things ready and right...

Have you had a look in this thread?

Those look fine, just make sure you get tongue and groove or overlap and not shiplap. You will also probably want to remove the plastic in the windows and mesh them with 19g galvanised mesh. (ETA. Just seen you mentioned this )

You could get a secondhand low 4ft hutch for a hideyhole and then make a ramp up to the top for a level. You want as big a run as you can, if it was me I'd want an 8x4 because when you think about it, 4x4 is about the same area as a 6x2 hutch. If you put it on grass you can mesh the underneath to make it so the bunnies can't dig out and predators can't dig in. Just make sure that again the run is made from 19g (at least) galvanised mesh.

Some people have made mesh doors so they can open the main door and get air through via the mesh door. You could do a low gate that you could step over if you aren't planning on having the door open.

My husband just emailed me these? would either of these be suitable for two bunnies?

The last one has pretty rubbish feedback tho :?

With the living space being on top of the run we would be able to have room for an additional run if we needed it?

Thanks!

The chicken coops aren't great cos generally the available space is a lot less than you'd get with other options. You'd probably end up paying a lot more for it too.

Anybody know what you call the angled metal mesh type strips that people use to protect the insides of the playhouses from being chewed and where to buy them ?

its called anglebead and you can buy it from places like wickes. its used in plastering:)

Someone on another rabbit forum has just said...

If you're getting rescue bunnies, the rescue place will almost certainly require you have a minimum hutch size of 6ft x 2ft x 2ft - being 5ft double-tiered won't help with that requirement I don't think as it's about them being able to do 3 hops across in one go...

Will this be right? so a 4x4ft wendy house wouldnt be big enough? Im getting very confused as to what is ok and what isnt :? Im really worried about setting something up and then it not meeting the requirements?

Im wondering wether we just go for a traditional hutch with attached run so that I know the footage is ok?

Would this one be ok?
http://www.happyhutch.co.uk/details.php?product=70

Hutch 6ftx3ftx3ft (18sqft)
Run 6ftx4ft (24sqft)

That one is £280 for that size hutch and run plus £10 postage. Which is cheaper than the one from bitsforpets...

Anyone have a happy hutch and like it??

You can probably buy a 6x4 shed/wendy house with an attached run for that price or maybe cheaper ?

I think im going to struggle space wise in my garden with a 6x4ft shed plus a nice big run too :( thats why i was looking at a smaller one :(

Then a 6x2x2 ft hutch [or bigger] attached to a 8x4 run will be good and it's the minimum recommendation :)

I think 4 x 4 is a fine size, especially with levels and attached run.:wave:

If you are a bit worried, you could contact the rescues in your area that you were maybe considering adopting from and asking them if they would re-home to you.

Or, if you want to go ahead with this set-up, you could always look to private re-homing, rather than a rescue.

Contact the rescues and ask. Some rescues have larger requirements but I would imagine that they would be happy with a 4x4 providing there is an attached run that is big enough.
