  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Haven't trimmed Tofu's nails yet

All our previous rabbits had to have their nails clipped about once a month but Tofu (6 months) doesn't seem to need a trim. Is it because he is so young and they just haven't had a chance to grow too long yet? He doesn't dig much, but he gets to go out on the deck, garden and garage which might file them down naturally.

Should I just be happy that I don't have to trim them?

I leave mine until they are about 6 month, it gives the nails a chance to develop ,sometimes if you cut them early they will grow misshaped , if they are running around that will be helping keep them trim

Its strange, Some of my buns have needed quite regular nail clipping, but my last two have never been done (Jen has just gone to the bridge, but had her a year & they didnt need doing at all during that time) and I've had Rhia about 10 months & hers dont need doing either. I'd just keep an eye & be glad of no clipping to do :D X
