Warren Veteran
poor melrin was diagnosed with this last december....and nearly died....luckily at the time i had a wonderful vet who liased with richard saunders at bristol and john chitty..and even.. edinburgh:shock: the diagnosis was necrotic fatty tissue in the abdomen.
what happened was we thought merlin needed a dental..so the did the vet even tho the spurs were small by comparison..but still gave him problems.
but whilst examining merlin..he was squeaking with pain and flinching every time his abdomen was felt..and the vet could feel this odd thickening along the whole of his tummy.
so they did the dental and put him on fluids painkillers...syringe feds and three days of liqid paraffin..as there was a small gap from where the tummy was made so narrow from the swollen inflammed tissue aorund and including the fatty tissue.
it got missed so many times and put down to teeth problems causing a form of stasis. But the mass wasnt mentioned until i changed vets and have seen another vet practice in an emergency with him and they mentioned the mass too...pity the original vet didnt!!
my vet has left the emsworth practice....gone to wales with her equine vet hubby...
but i was a bit miffed with the other vet on emergengy duty who both times its happened this year has told me he didnt need seeing let alone admitting:evil:
so back to my very first vets i used for vaccs on my 3 cats i had all those years ago.........and theyve spotted it...i asked emsworth vets to fax the notes across which they did...and hence merlins in the vets and receiving fluids feeds painkillers etc.
the mass can cause such a narrowing that it easily causes a blockage..first time he had loads of berties fur..he washed bertie so much...and berties a rew frenchie..melrins a black little lionhead cross!!
i copied this teeny bit from the merck manual..they were talking about in being in cows but this bit applies.....
Hard masses of necrotic fat form in the omentum, mesentery, and perirenal fat and may cause clinical disease when they compress the intestine, obstruct the birth canal, or compress ureters
compression of the intstines is indeed what it does to merlin. surgery is not an option as its so widespread and abdo surgery means almost certain death to the poor bunny in question
so howcome all the other vets missed this mass? they all gave him treatment for stasis with or without the dental....but no one mentioned this mass...i thought it was gas build up he was like a little football.
so the other vets found it easily...and said it was an odd mass. howcome they found it then?
so if in doubt always ask for a second opinion..i figure out now with similar symptoms i may have lost at least two buns with this undiagnosed problem
