  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Friend's rabbit hasn't eaten or drunk by herself in 2 weeks

Young Bun
As per the title. My friend doesn't live in my country so I can't 'send' her to my exotics vets who are great.

Her vets' recommendation for metacam is very different to ours (if working out different kg etc). She's giving the bunny 0.4mg for a 2.5kg bunny twice a day. We give ours ~1.5mg for 2kg twice a day when sick.

The bunny (almost 4 years old) has not been eating or drinking by herself for just over 2 weeks; my friend is luckily at home at moment so she's able to give her critical care with added baby food to make it more palatable - 5 syringes of 70kg metacam dog syringe, 5 times a day (I hope that makes sense). In these 2 weeks the bunny has not improved at all. Before this the bunny was spayed, which happened in the middle of January (adding this in case it's relevant).

Vet has come up with different ideas - UTI (antibiotics given, appears to have done nothing). Now they are saying maybe it's EC, so the bunny is on Panacur since 2 weeks ago, no signs of any improvement yet.

Other things are the vet said her teeth are pointed inwards, they filed them a little. They also said she had a hard bladder.

Any ideas what could be wrong? I've found what seems to be an exotics vet for my friend in her country but they're further away than she's used to and she's reluctant to go - she doesn't have a lot of money right now and the various vet trips have already racked up a fair amount, so I think she's worried about adding more, but the current vets don't seem to know what they're doing.

Sounds as though the Rabbit needs a full Dental under GA, if the ‘tooth filing’ was done whilst Rabbit was awake. It is impossible to carry out a thorough Dental examination and treatment on a conscious Rabbit

The ‘hard bladder’ might be indicative of bladder sludge/stones. An abdominal X-ray is needed to assess this and treatment could involve catheterisation and bladder flushing or cystotomy

In the long run it would be more economical to see an Exotics Vet to obtain the correct diagnosis and treatment straight away rather than having numerous consultations with a Vet who knows little about Rabbits and just prescribes a variety of treatments on a trial and error basis without having any idea what the actual problem is.

By this stage I would want a full blood profile run, liver and possibly renal function might now be compromised.

Thank you for all of this, I have passed it on. The rabbit's currently in the vets for the past day and night. They've injected her stomach with antibiotics today and they are doing checks but my friend hasn't signed anything for a GA, which I'm guessing would have had to happen. No x-ray also as far as I know. They've said she might need to be put down, I've said to my friend that she should take her for a second opinion first.

I am sorry that things are not looking at all good

I'm sorry to say that this afternoon after two days at the vets the bunny was put down. The vet finally emailed a specialist and I guess at this point that was the result. I'll leave it there as I'm very upset and honestly angry with the whole situation.

How very sad  At least the Rabbit is no longer suffering x
