  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Benny has a bald patch! Why? Is it serious? Advice please...

Benny is quite a fluffy bunny and is currently molting from front and back towards the middle. Concerned about either him or Ruby swallowing too much fur I gently pull out Benny's loose fur every couple of days. This fur comes away easily in tufts.

I was just pulling the fur from around his tail and I noticed a BALD PATCH APPEARING!

OMG!!! Is this normal? I googled it and have terrified myself with possible causes!

He is energetic, big appetite and having rubbed the bald patch it doesn't bother him so it can't be sore. Skin looks healthy underneath.

BUT he is a fluffy bunny and it looks wrong and I am really worried about grooming him again in case it gets bigger.

Do I need to worry? Should I take him to the vets? Is this normal?

I have a black bunny which gets one or 2 bald patches when he's moulting. Maybe it shows up more on black bunnies. I don't think it is anything to worry about but maybe someone else will be along with more advice.

It could be fur mites. It's the classic place they get mites. Seen any dandruff?
