Please Note - Medical Advice
Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.
You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.
We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.
Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.
Good news.
Bear has eaten some food overnight, not loads, but some. He has also poo'd 9 times and has been for a wee. We took in most of the "hutch accessories" (littertray etc) last night along with Cam (buddy) to try and settle him/get him back to normal which seems to have helped.
Hopefully have another update in a few hours... a positive one at that!
Good news, bad news. Bear came home last night and seemed OK. He hopped around the garden a bit and are some dandelion.
Bad news, this morning he seems to be back to how he was pre-vet visit. I wonder if the painkillers hadn't worn off? Could be his teeth? I can't think what else it would be now...
Will probably be taking back to vet later.
Really difficult to say how long it will go on for. You can also tell the vet how much you can afford (I keep a tally of how much it costs) ...
Giving him fluids is one thing the vet can do, taking the glucose (good news about that) and syringe feed during the night.
Most vets will try and get rabbits home asap, as they know they are happier in a familiar environment
Sorry to hear this. I have often found that a set back occurs just after they get home - I hope the vet can give you some encouragement as things are on the right track generally.
Vibes for Bear (and you)
Nothing bought home with us, he was given those drugs whilst at the vet though. Will ask the vet what they think. Unfortunately we are out a fair bit today so can't monitor him as much as we need to. So realistically best for him to be at vets for some undivided attention
Have asked for the vet to call us back when they have a free spot. Reception said to bring him in but I'm hesitant to do that if we can administer these drugs at home...
Vet wants us to bring him in again to decide best course of action (unfortunately different vets work the weekend shift...).
So taking him in this after again
