  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Abscess on digestive tract - very poorly rabbit

Young Bun
Posting for advice. My rabbit Blossom, who is 9 is currently in the vets and is very poorly  She has been in for investigations into a lump in her abdomen. After an ultrasound scan and having ‘muck’ drawn out of the lump by a needle, it has been confirmed as an abscess. Due to it being attached to her digestive tract and her age, surgery isn’t a viable option.
The options are:
A)Treat with antibiotics. Initially in the vets where she can have IV fluids, injectable pain meds etc
B) PTS
Unfortunately Blossom is very, very uncomfortable despite being on metacam and vetergesic and is now refusing to take syringe feeds.
My decision is, do we try the antibiotics but have the difficult challenge of trying to get her to eat whilst she is clearly significantly uncomfortable.
Or, say goodbye due to the poor prognosis of fully clearing up the abscess due to not being able to operate. She is such a sweet old girl and I don’t want to put her through any unnecessary pain but equally feel awful giving up on her. Does anyone have any words of wisdom or advice please?

Poor Blossom :( What a difficult decision to have to make and I'm really sorry that you are in this position. I have no advice for you other than to discuss it thoroughly with your vet. I'm presuming that you are confident in your vet being rabbit savvy. Sending Blossom lots of vibes and you lots of hugs.

Thanks for your reply Omi. She is with an exotics specialist who I trust implicitly. She is incredible and has helped many of my rabbits over the years. We have decided to admit her for the night to see if we can get her more comfortable. If we can get her eating then atleast we stand some chance of keeping her well enough to fight this abscess. I’ve always called Blossom ‘Bloss the Boss’ - she needs that fighting spirit more than ever now.

I'm so sorry to hear about Blossom. I think I would be guided by your vet, and I really hope that she can keep Blossom as comfortable as possible to give her a chance to fight this. Sending lots of vibes for your bunny, and comforting vibes for yourself, keep us posted on how she is doing xxx

Thank you for everyone’s lovely words.
Sadly Blossom passed away about an hour ago, she was very poorly and didn’t have any fight left in her :( Although my heart is breaking, I know she will now be reunited with her late husbun Buster who adored her from the day they met.

Oh no I'm so very sorry, she's at peace now bless her. You did everything you could to help her, and she was obviously very much loved, which I'm sure she knew right to the end. Binky free Blossom xxxx

I am so sorry for your loss of Blossom. What a lovely photo of Buster and Blossom.
May your years of memories help you during this difficult time.
