  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Teeth problems

We got Dandelion from the RSPCA last Sunday. He had just been neutured. We took him to our vet for his injections and a general check up. I'd noticed that he was slower at eating than the other two bunnies so I suspected a teeth problem. Our vet confirmed this - she told us that his back teeth had hooks that were going into his tongue :( Poor Dandelion :( She trimmed them. She was very angry that the RSPCA vet hadn't done this while he was under GA to save him some distress. We are angry that this went unnoticed and Dande was suffering :x If we hadn't have taken him, his suffering would have continued unnoticed. Shouldn't these places do a full heath check on the animals as soon as they come in?

Anyway his teeth have been trimmed and he's eating slowing but this morning one of his eyes is really runny but he seems ok, he's run around and being nosey. Is this runny eye because of the teeth trimming or should I take him back to the vet?

Hi, am am glad that your vigilance has meant your Buns teeth have now been sorted out. The runny eye may be due to the fact that the roots of the molar teeth have overgrown and are pressing on the nasolacrimal duct (like a tear duct). Once this has happened it cannot be cured so the symptoms have to be managed with daily eye bathing, drying the surrounding area thoroughly and applying some vaseline to protect the delicate skin around the eye. A tear duct flush can be attempted (by your Vet) but if the problem has been established for some time the tissue of the duct will be thickened and so total clearance not possible.
Antibiotic drops are only indicated if actual infection is present.
I too am cross with the RSPCA. I would ask your Vet for a copy of your Buns treatment summary and would then write to the RSPCA expressing your concerns and enclosing your Vets report. You can point out that you are NOT expecting reimbursement of the Vet fees you have incured but that you are concerned that the Bun was re-homed to you in a poor condition.

Should you bath the eye in warm or cold water and do you just use cotton wool to clean it and then dry it? My rabbit has runny eyes because of long term teeth problems, so I need to start doing this on him which I hadn't realised I needed to do before.

You can use COOLED boiled water. Using cosmetic cotton wool pads is best as they dont moult like ordinary cotton wool :D
