  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

BVDA and referrals

As a lot of you know, Travis has a lot of problems with spurs on his molars, he has to have them burred monthly, and has already had 2 removed. I have tried desperately to make sure his diet is as "munching" and "tooth wearing" as possible, but it's not making a difference. I have a feeling it may be root related, and due to the frequency of his burrs would like to have him referred to a specialist.

I have been on www.BVDA.co.uk and there is one animal dental specialist in warwickshire, which would probably be closest to me. Has anyone else had to refer their bun to a specialist? I take it I would just have to contact their surgery to explain and arrange an appointment?

Does anyone know of any other specialists for Dental work in buns who may be able to help? (would have to be around Northampton/Coventry/B'ham/Leics/Oxford way?)

Maybe a bit far but my bun with dental problems now go to Vets for Pets in Gamston, nottingham which was a recommendation from here.
Jill @ hunnybunnys also takes hers there.

So far Esmerelda has had incisors trimmed, back teeth burred under gas and tomorrow she will have them done more thoroughly under GA.

There's a bit more about Gamstons on this thread:
http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=22417&highlight=gamston

They are also very reasonably priced.

Thanks for replying on my other topic about teeth removal BTW, tomorrow I am going to ask about getting the teeth with spurs removed as otherwise it looks as though she will need a GA every 4 weeks which I don't want to put her through.
Does Travis have to have a GA each month too? Its an expensive business having bunns with teeth problems isn't it!

Thanks. yup, v v v expensive, I seem to get a slight discount at mine now though for being such a "regular". I would just like to be able to find somewhere that could advise me if there was anything else that could be done other than burring and constant GA's :(

Thats what I'm hoping for, I would like Esmerelda to not have to go to the vets so often. Will give you an update on what they say tomorrow, as might help with Travis also x

Sounds like we're all going through the same problems! Taking Gabbie back next week to see if hers need doing again.I asked about having them removed and was told they couldn't.I'm worried about her going under a GA so often if it is once a month.I think the vet thought I was just asking to save money! Obviously I could do without a £50 bill every 4 weeks but my main worry was to Gabbie's health.Keep me posted on how your bunnies get on thanks.

Hi Jayne
Esmerelda's GA went ok, she had to have a tooth removed as week as the burring.
Vet said they couldn't remove her back teeth there but could refer me to someone else. I have to take her back next week so will let you know if they say anything further thats useful.

TBH I just want her to be well too, but I can't deny the cost is a worry, along with finding the time and an understanding employer for all these vets visits x

I'm so glad Esmerelda's home safe with her Mummy! (sorry to confuse you posting similar things on 2 threads!!) I'm hoping Gabbie's were a one off but I'll have to wait and see but like I said it's not just about money, time etc we're just worried about our buns health!

Oh bless you I didn't think that at all!! :D The more posts I read from you the more I think we're two of a kind!! (sorry I'm not sure it's a good thing to be like me!! :D )

Sorry Keri I realised as I reread this I hijacked your thread abit  Hope Travis is ok please let me know how things go as I've never had rabbits before let alone one with tooth problems (although I may be jumping ahead, she's only had them done once and the vet said they weren't bad!) so anyone who's going through the same I'm grateful for advice. Thanks :D
