VHD injection

Hello!
I've booked Jack in for his VHD injection this afternoon.
Last year he had a reaction to it and I'm wondering if there's a way to prevent this happening again?

Last year he was very miserable after it and stopped eating and pooping, and ended up with GI stasis. He had to spend a night at the vet, getting fluids and prepulsid, and it took several weeks for him to get back to his normal self. One of his ears also went floppy after the injection as if he was a lop, he seemed to have no feeling in it and did not react in any way if you touched it. It was the opposite side from the injection side. We're not sure if it was also a reaction to the injection or if it was coincidence. After about a week it returned to normal.
I'd only had him for about a week and a half when I got his first VHD jab: could the reaction just have been because I put him through a stressful experience before he'd really settled in here? He had no problems with the myxi vaccine.

Thanks in advance for any advice,
Kate and Jack

Hiya Kate and Jack

Difficult one this really - not sure what you can do to prevent anything happening again - might be worth making sure you mention last years events to the Vet (Just in case its a different Vet).

It could have been a stress thing although I've not heard of this kinda reaction before. Zac also had a reaction to VHD last year - he developed a limp on his front foot which just lasted for 48 hours and then went - this happened immediately after the VHD Injection.

You might find your little bunny will be o.k this time and I know its concerning when you feel you might be putting the bunny through it again but I think for the protection the Vaccination gives its better to have than not.

Hope your little bunster gets on o.k - keep us posted.

Maybe you could start pro-biotics as a precaution and also make sure you have tempting foods to hand. I think Lany is right,it would be a good idea to discuss it with the vet too.

Jack had his injection about an hour ago, and is bright and bouncy as usual: he doesn't seem to have been too bothered by it at all this time (fingers crossed!). I have some probiotic to give him, and he's happily munching on some hay just now.

I'm keeping a close eye on him but hopefully the reaction last time will have been a one off.

He had a thorough health check while we are at the vet and is very healthy at the moment, which is great as I've had quite a few problems with him in the last year! :D

Thats great news Kate and interesting too - might be then that Zac might not have the same reaction second time round
