  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help! Injured 4 month old bunny

I just got two bunnies from a fair here in Padua, a lionhead and a longhaired holland hop. I never had bunnies before so I'm not an expert. Lotus, my holland hop, has some of her toenails missing (looks like some other animal bit her) and I didn't really want to return her just for that. She is really sweet and loves to be cuddled but I'm still worried about her wounds. What can I do? I don't have any expert vets near my area, most of them are only for cats and dogs.

Hiya  i think if i were you, i would take her to one of those vets anyway - a wound is a wound, it doesn't really matter which animal it's on. It is important to find a good rabbit vet for any future health issues, but any vet should be able to help with this problem i think... is she putting her foot down ok? If not she may need some pain relief while it heals, the medicine we normally get is called Metacam, it's an anti-inflammatory. Good luck!

You need to get the Rabbit to a Vet, even if the Vet is not a 'Rabbit expert' they should be capable of assessing the problem and prescribing pain relief if needed. If the affected area is open the infection is a real possibility. So antibiotic cover may be needed.
