  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Respiratory Infections & Baytril

Alpha Buck
Marley was sneezing now and again and had a wet nose last week so took him to the vet on Friday. He got some baytril to take, 0.9ml once a day and it seems as if he's had his last syringe tonight (nurse gave a bit extra so will give it him tomorrow). Seems a short course to me and he's still got runny eyes, wet nose and has done a couple of sneezes this evening. Hes around 2kg. How long has other people's course of antibiotics lasted?

I would expect the course to be a minimum of 7 days. With Respiratory Tract Infections the course often needs to be even longer. It is important to continue treatment for a good few days AFTER all symptoms have resolved.

I was given a week of baytril initially for misfit but it was extended to a month as no improvement after a week. A month did the trick. It has returned though and I gather that snuffles can be a recurring problem. I'd phone the vet and ask for more antibiotics.

I'll phone in the morning and see if I can get a repeat prescription, his symptoms are still present and that'd provide anotjer 5 days worth, thank you. Can I ask how long its been since your bun last had one? What causes it?

Respiratory Tract Infections are often but not always caused by bacteria called Pasteurella Multocida. There are different strains of this bacteria and the strain and pathogenicity (how much disease they cause) differs. Some strains will cause upper respiratory tract symptoms-'Snuffles', other strains may cause Pneumonia and/or septicaemia.

Often antibiotic treatment does not fully eliminate the bacteria, although clinical symptoms may resolve. Hence the importance in not stopping abx too soon.

Some Rabbits may never have a relapse after one episode of active clinical symptoms. Others may have several relapses, especially at times of concurrent stress such as after a GA or if they have another illness to contend with.

Rabbits who have Dental problems may have problems with 'snuffles like' symptoms too, this can sometimes be due to tooth root elongation.

You're a star thank you for the info, I'll be having a read up. Managed to get in touch with the vets and the OH has managed to pick up a repeat, fingers crossed it'll be enough.
