Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

tooth advice needed

Hi,
I was hoping for a little advice regarding my bun Teddy. I took her to the vets on Saturday and she had her teeth checked. The vet said one side is perfect but on the other side the tooth is wearing down unevenly . She said it's nothing to worry about yet but I need to encourage her to eat more hay and chew more things. She eats loads of hay, she loves it and does chew her toys. She isn't even a year old.

What can I give her to encourage her to chew more? Also what will happen if that side doesn't wear down?

Thanks in advance for any advice. X

Unfortunately its possible no amount of hay or chewing will wear the teeth down sufficiently. Many of us on RU, inclusive of myself, have a bun or more with similar issues. Their teeth dont meet up or similar and so they dont wear down and need dentals whenever the teeth are causing an issue.

Ah ok. thanks. So do I just need to keep my eye open for any signs of discomfort and not eating? Do they've a general anesthetic for a dental? X

Yep lack of eating is a definate sign to look out for, also sometimes they will change their eating habits ie become fussy and eat only certain foods. She'll have to have a GA for a dental.
