  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Recurring eye ulcers

weedug

Mama Doe
Timmy has developed another corneal ulcer in both eyes. Although one eye had almost healed, the other still had a small ulcer in it. The ulcers developed within about a week.

For the other ulcers he had a debridement, Tiacil drops, Fucithalmic drops, Viscotears, Lacri-Lube, and serum drops made from his blood.

He is on daily Meloxidyl and seems happy, although he does still have his eyes closed some of the time.

Can anyone suggest any other treatment? Has anyone used insulin for ulcers, and what was the outcome?

So sorry to hear this :(

Bumping it up to see if anyone knowledgable is around.

Good luck

The cause seems to be dry-eye, everything else has been ruled out. His tear test the first time was 0 and 1, and is now 7 and 9.

He has had a course of antibiotics though, although I can't remember the name.

He had a general for the last debridement, because he was really nervous at that stage, and the vet thoroughly checked his eyes for any foreign body, checked his third eyelid, and if his eyelashes were causing the problem. Everything seemed fine. Swabs were taken and they were also fine.

Will look through the links now, thanks. Although it is early days, my vet is getting concerned for his long-term outlook.
