  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sue - to myxi or not?

Rhianna

Wise Old Thumper
Five of my buns are due their myxi next month - among them is Sue.

Sue has calcification of the kidneys which means that she only has half a kidney working. She has lost loads and loads of weight and I am now giving her a low calcium, high moisture, high calorie diet to try and keep her quality of life as good as possible for as long as possible.

I can't decide whether to let her have her myxi jab or not. My vet has offered to come out to me to do the five anyway so she won't have the additional stress of going to the surgery. I just worry she really isn't strong enough to cope with the vaccine but on the other hand all my buns caught myxi a few years ago in November and I know how awful that was. They did survive but the weakest and most poorly one died later that year.

I feel that whatever decision I make will be wrong. It may not be a decision I have to make as I don't know if my vet will vaccinate Sue anyway. He seemed surprised she was as well as she was last time I took her to be weighed.

I really don't know what to do for the best :(

Advice, suggestions or just some empathy would be much appreciated. I'm single and deal with all my fur children on my own and sometimes really wish I had a partner to share the difficult decisions with.

I had this exact debate with Badger when he vaccination came round in july (there's at least one thread on it in my thread history). I decided at that time I wouldn't vaccinate him, but that if I felt he was ok enough to do it in the future then I would (so far he has not had it). I also went against my vets I that decision because she felt he was strong enough, I decided he wasn't. I think I made the right decision for him.

As well as Badger, I also have Wish who is not vaccinated.

You can change your mind if you decide not to vaccinate, but if you vaccinate and it goes wrong, you can't change your mind.

I stopped vaccinated Daisy a year ago. She is a house rabbit, but does go in the garden. I weighed up everything and decided she would benefit more from not being vaccinated because of her underlying health issues.
