Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sneezing

Hi all,

Noel sneezes every so often. Is this normal? We've only had him a week so could he be allergic to something? His eyes are bright, nose not wet. He is very active and seems very happy.

Should we get him checked out? He needs his nails clipped anyway so could take him to vet and ask about sneezing too.

Hi Louise

It could be something that needs checking out, but it could also be his bedding or litter, or even something that has gotten stuck up his nose like a grass seed which he is trying to sneeze out.

Worth monitoring and if it doesn't stop in the next day then get it looked at - a vet can look up the nose, but could also get a swab taken incase it's an infection. Something as small as a grass seed or piece of debris can become imbedded and cause infection anyway so if the sneezing continues it does need looking at.

Some dusty hay can be responsible for sneezing, as can some cleaners/disinfectants, and some dusty litters like wood shavings (one of the reasons not to use them). If you can rule these out then you need to find another cause in my opinon.

Hope it's nothing serious.

Helen

Hi Helen,

Thank you :) We use wood shavings in his litter tray and hutch so perhaps that is it? He only seems to sneeze when he's in his room and not in the rest of the house. I'm going to get his nails clipped at vet this week so will mention it then. Thank you :)
