Howdy!

Ricochet Rabbit

Young Bun
I'm just getting started in the rabbit biz.I have one buck and two does, this weekend I'll be adding more as well as getting started on some baby rabbits. From what I've learned about them online so far,I never knew what interesting critters they were.

Hello.
What breed are they? :) Look forward to pics.

I haven't got that far yet!LOL!All I know is one doe and the buck is albino, the other doe,who is very active and curious,is mostly white with smokey colored ears and a little of the same coloring on the nose.I'll take some pics tomorrow and maybe someone here can tell me what they are.

hi i breed as well (not all the time) hope all goes well for you baby buns are truly amazing to watch grow and change:wave:

That will be difficult as the woman we're buying them from didn't keep records, unfortunately.I don't think the opporation was especially well maintained.A situation that I am working on rectifying.Tomorrow on my day off I'm going into an intensive cage scrubbing and rabbit bathing mode.I don't think my male, who I think I'm going to call 'Pig Pen',is going to like it much, none of the animals has had a whole lot of attention, also something I plan on correcting.I'm trying to make sure that all my animals are well provided for. Thanks for the welcome all!

:wave:Before you start breeding your rabbits please consider the following:
Will you be able to carry out home-checks? (Or else how will you know if the rabbits that you sold live in an appropriate accommodation and not in a tiny hutch at the bottom of the garden?)

What will happen when the new owners' children get bored with their new toys (sorry, I meant rabbits)? Will you be able to take them back? Will you have the space to house them? If you answer 'No' to this you may end up contributing to the number of unwanted animals that end up in rescues.

What are you going to do with your rabbits when you realise that the money that you have been spending on their health, accommodation and food far exceeds the money that you are earning from the sale of the babies?

Finally, will you be able to cope with the premature and preventable death of your breeding does? (85% of unspayed female rabbits die of uterine cancer).

Personally, I would never breed any of my animals.

Oh, welcome to the forum.

personally if you cant go back at least 4 generations on each bunny to check genetic health issues and arent sure even on the breed adn the commenc ailments that breeed specifically has then i wouldnt breed from the 2 you have. also be aware they can only be bred around 2-3 times a year to stop complications and fatiuge/illness and will need vaccinations 3 per year as well as pannacuring (very important to protect against ec). buns will need large areas too each will need 6x3x2ft hutch and a 6x6ft run too. the babies musnt leave mum til 8 weeks unless being attacked or are ill in which case they must be hand reared(incredibly hard to do) on goats milk or kitten formula. and dad must be removed immediatly after conception else she will be reimpregnated as soo nas she has given birth and he could injur or kill the babies...or mum may do if feels threatened.. some buns do not make good mothers and can kill maim or even eat their babies and some mothers will die in child birth. i dont want to put you off (am not fully anit breeding) as i do believe there are some good breeders out there thoough very few, and so many rescues it seems a shame to bring more buns through.. i just want you to be fully aware as it does sound like you will care for your buns. homechecks and adequet accomodation are essential too in future life and prospective owners should be told about vhd, ec, myxi, housing, dietry needs, bedding preferences, breed problems, and about bunnys prefering to live in pairs oh and of course about things such as nail trimming sexing and neutering adn cancer risks,.. oh and after age 3years the does should be retired from breeding neutered and kept as a pet as after that more complications can arise and uterine cancer can set in i personally believe that bunnys are happier neutered and living in pairs or groups but this is only achieved if neutered. good luck i hope you do things properly and take advice from good breeders if you can find some remember brc registered doesnt make them good either! there is a lot to learn about rabbits in fact vets classify them as exotics as there is so much to know and very few specialise in rabbit medicine. welcome to the forum xx
