  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cataracts

Poor Thumper has early stage of a cataract in one eye. I noticed that one eye looked different than the other under torch light. The vet confirmed she has the beginings of a cataract. She is only 2-3 years old. Does anyone know how long cataracts take to develop to the stage of blindness? Also is she more likley to develop the same in the other eye? It looks perfectly healthy at the moment vet says.

:cry:Any one got any Source of information on Cataracts. Most of what i can find is related to Age related cataracts. Thumper is so young she has a long time ahead of her and I want to ensure I give her the best care for her condition.
Does any one know of a good rabbit vet in or around Luton/Dunstable. My vet did not offer much information and I now have so many questions i wish i had asked.

Lucifer has a congenital cataract in her right eye and has managed fine; there are three differences between her and a "normal" rabbit though: -
1) When cleaning her head & ears she's closer to the ground
2) She doesn't binky that high (O/H says it's because she's got a big bum though!)
3) To get on the window ledge in my front room she needs a step as she can't jump that high (slightly higher than my knee) - she jumps down fine though!

Other than those she's just like a "normal" bunny.
