Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny with broken leg :(

Honestly if I could afford it I would get him the treatment but I just don’t have hundreds of pounds for X-rays and surgery. I feel so guilty that I can’t do anymore for him. I am going to phone around a few rescue centres tomorrow and see if they can help and if it means I have to give him up for adoption so that he gets the help he needs then that is what I will have to do. My children will be devastated :( we’ve only had him for two weeks I just stupidly didn’t get round to insuring him yet.

You are certainly faced with an extremely difficult situation. I know you really want to do your best for him and if your position were different you could afford to have him treated.
Yes, of course your children will be upset, as will you, but - thinking of your little rabbit - Barn Yard Bunnies offer of help seems to be the very best option. I know she will ensure that he gets the treatment he needs and will be fostered out to live with someone, either temporarily or permanently if necessary. She has even offered to help with the transport arrangements. You don’t need the heartache of phoning round Rescues, you already have an amazing offer of help from someone trustworthy and knowledgeable.

Thank you all for your advice. I wish the rescue centres could do his treatment and then bring him back to us :( I don’t understand why he has to then be adopted out when he already had a loving family. I think I am going to have to look into payment plans for his treatment because I just don’t have the heart to give him up. Please be assured I will not let him suffer and have his best interests at heart. The vet I went to today is the pdsa, I don’t think treatment gets much cheaper than that, which is why I haven’t really contacted anyone else. She said I had the option to take him home with pain relief and see how he does as she has seen rabbits with the same break heal on their own and live normal lives. Or she said I could put him to sleep. I asked did she think he would be in a lot of pain if I took him home, she said no, because he was eating and drinking and walking around fine. She advised if he got worse obviously to go back and we would have to either operate or pts. Pts isn’t an option for me I will do my best to help him first and raise the funds somehow, but if I can’t then I will need to contact a rescue.

Barn Yard Bunnies...are you able to private message me? I’m not sure how it works

Yes, when I message you at the top of the screen it will show you have a message. If you go to messages you click on message. Don't feel bad, we are not here to judge but help.

Thank you. I will wait for your message

I do hope you will allow ARC to help. I have adopted numerous Rabbits from them and they most definitely NEVER PTS unless it is for humane reasons. They NEVER do so if there is a chance of treating the animal to enable him/her to go on to have a good quality of life. One of my ARC Rabbits broke his leg. The Vets ARC use carried out surgery, as the fracture was severe and irreparable the leg was amputated. The Bunny went on to have a happy life for the next 8 years.

Glad you're considering payment plans, I hope a vet will work with you.

Would the vets that ARC use consider letting you do a payment plan maybe? One less animal in rescue that way, considering your bunny already has a happy home.

I'm glad you've been messaging barn yard bunnies and hopefully together you can find the best way forward.

Just to add that the PDSA aren't necessarily the cheapest when you need to pay for treatment - they offer subsidised treatment for those who qualify and for just one animal but outside of that prices seem to be 'going rate' and maybe more - so, if you do decide to fund the op yourself it would still be worth asking around. Vets should be able to give you a ballpark figure without seeing your rabbit.

You could also look into interest free credit cards if you can't get a payment plan with the vet. Some of them give you up to 30 mths interest free so, if you paid something off each month, you could clear the debt long before interest kicks in.

Best of luck with whatever you decide. Xx

My bridge bun Cherry broke her leg in 2015. It was out of hours and the emergency mobile number for my vet was on voicemail and no one called me back. I found a vet prepared to see her and they suggested PTS but agreed to refer her to a specialist - John Chitty. I took her to Andover the following day and John set the leg by fitting a piece of metal inside.
I moved her inside to the kitchen with her husbun Hovis. The leg did not set properly and had to be amputated. The amputation then became infected and had to be redone.

In between all this I had a hysterectomy so was unable to drive. It was all a nightmare and the total cost, which included Hovis who also became poorly, was £2500. She wasn't insured. I had help from friends and members of RU and John agreed to let me pay the last part monthly.

I fostered Cherry whilst I was recovering from the hysterectomy so she was well cared for while I was unable to lift or bend.

The stump was continually sore and bleeding no matter what I tried - even special flooring in their pen in the kitchen. Eventually, with the agreement of John, I had her PTS at a local vet as it wasn't fair to her to continue with the treatment. Her quality of life was too poor.

I still worry I did the wrong thing by not having her PTS sooner. I work in a call centre - I don't get paid a lot - so £2500 was a fortune to me but I thought I had to give Cherry a chance. John is awesome and I know no vet would have been able to save the leg when he couldn't.

Her break was a bad break though and she was clearly in considerable pain before I took her to the OOH vet. There was absolutely no way that I could have left the leg untreated. It was very different to your scenario.

I know many buns do recover and have a good quality of life, even as tripod bunnies and, in your position, I would give your bun every chance.

I am on annual leave at the moment and also live in Hampshire. If Barn Yard Bunnies friend couldn't transport your bun to ARC straight away I could do it today, tomorrow afternoon/evening or Sunday morning.

Sending lots of vibes for a positive outcome for your little man xxx

I remember your poor Cherry and her leg and how difficult things were.

Hello everyone, I have spoken to the vet and they are hopefully going to agree a payment plan with me. Bing (the rabbit) has been eating and drinking today and was quite responsive when I was talking to him this morning. Have given him his pain relief. Am considering getting an indoor hutch so that I can keep a closer eye on him but it is probably quieter for him outside (two small children = a fair bit of noise!) Fingers crossed all will end well, I need to do my best for him. Will keep you updated.

I am pleased to hear that your Vet has agreed to a payment plan going forward. I am sure the Vet has given you good advice with regards to making sure Bing continues to eat and poo as normal. When a Bunny has any health issue that may cause pain the Bunny may not eat much and this can cause the slow down ot the gastrointestinal motility. Gut stasis then becoming a secondary problem. So as well as monitoring Bing's general demeanour I would advise you to be vigilant to his daily eating habits and poo output.

It is very possible that the fracture will knit together, but of course as your Vet explained without diagnostics to establish the precise nature of the fracture (ie Xrays) it is not possible to say for certain how things could pan out. It does sound as though the Vet is being very compassionate and willing to work with you to achieve the best possible outcome for Bing, regardless of the financial constraints.

Vets often get a lot of 'bad press' about being nothing but 'money grabbers'. But the majority of Vets will always put the welfare of the sick/injured animal before monetary gain.

Sending lots of healing vibes for Bing Bunny

Best of luck for Bing's leg. My offer is always open and my friend in Totton said she is more than happy to help. She drives so you wouldn't have to travel.

Thanks for your offer as well Karen.

I think most of us have been in the situation of a high vets bill we can't really afford. That's why I offered to take Bing. Two months ago ARC took a young cat who had to have an amputation, I don't deal with the cat side, but I do know it was a complex operation performed at the out of hours vet. I don't know the full situation other than it was an emergency.

If your vets can't offer you a reasonable payment plan let me know. One of our other volunteers is experienced with looking after rabbits after they have had a amputation.

As always you always go the extra mile to help any animal in need

Good news I have been offered a payment plan. We are starting with X-rays tomorrow morning to determine the extent of his injury and then we will go from there. My main priority is to ensure that bing goes through as little stress and suffering as possible.

He has been having his metacam twice a day to help with pain relief. As I said earlier he was quite bright this morning. I let him down into a small run for 5 mins, just to ensure he keeps his gut healthy. He wasn’t running or jumping about just walking around and seemed quite happy to do so. I think the painkillers are helping. Obviously I’m not going to let him run around or handle him more than necessary I just don’t want him to get any issues with his gut as well. I saw that he had a wee and poo so was happy with that. He has had his nuggets, parsley and a carrot with the top today so that’s good and had been drinking.

I’m going through the PDSA so I am confident they have his best interests at heart. As I said we will see the extent of his break tomorrow morning after X-ray and go from there.

Thanks everyone for your offers of help and support.

I will keep you all updated. Thanks again for your help and advice x
