blitzen is leaking wee update seeing molly varga

blitzen is still really wet and im having to bath him everyday. All his fur is still stained and he is on the verge of urine scald. Been back the vets today and hes lost 500g in a week and thats with me giving him loads of oats mixed with the baytril. Vet said i will refer to a specialist and ive asked to see molly varga. I have to get a urine sample which will be fun. Im so worried about him. I asked should i start to panucur but she said no wait and rule out other thing? He only did 5 days baytril which i know isnt enough but i will feel better knowing he is under a specialist. Vet said its around £80 for referal. Does anyone know how much blood tests are with molly (and if its normal prices for treatment) need to start budgeting because he isnt insured.

Oh my goodness this is awful .. 500g is too much for a bun to lose in a week :( Definitely see Molly and find out what's going on.

You shouldn't really need to get a urine sample. What the vet can do is express the bladder. And if there's nothing to express (unlikely) then they can give fluids and help them to wee.

I am sorry for the costs involved. when you say it's £80 for the referral, do you mean that's Molly's cost? Or is that on top of Molly's fee? Hopefully blood tests are no more than a normal standard cost.

Sending you hugs and vibes W&S. You try so hard with your buns, it just doesn't seem fair ...

My vet said i pay the £80 to molly. I dont see the point in giving a sample to my vet when i could give one to molly. Ive always liked this vets but she always tries to go for the expensive option first. She was all for putting him on panacur until i said i had 8 full syringes in at home. She wanted to do an untrasound before bloods and urine. It was me that mentioned the referal and then she suggested the urine sample, this was after saying rule other things out first. Its not as if i dont spend loads there. My lad has to have constant care for joints and blindness and hes only 6 and im always taking one rabbit or another. Plus all 10 have vaccines there too, and 8 have been neutered too. I will wait to see molly and give her my money instead. Would you could his fur shorter to make drying him after baths quicker?

I'm sorry to hear Blitzen is no better - I wonder what could have caused it? It iss a good idea to trim/shave the fur around his back end as it will make it easier to dry him off. Is Blitzen one of the group?

Ive been wrecking my brain trying to figure out what it could be. I remember my huband saying the buns had had a fight with in the quad (he had let the nethies out without blocking off view of the quad). I did check him and their was no cuts and i even got the vet to check his genitals and all way fine. It could just be coincidence or would a big shock cause it? He is out of one of the quads.

Definitely :)

With the amount you spend, I should hope your vet nurse would do that for free at one of your consults - with clippers. I use professional clippers at home but curved scissors are also very good x

Remind me - are his bloods OK? Kidneys OK? Urine tests for infection?

he hasnt had any done. The vet just gave the baytril and when i asked for urinalysis done she said i was better with an ultrasound and when i said im better seeing a specialist she said get a urine sample off him. It was all contradictory. Last week when she gave the bayril she said do the 5 days and if they dont work she will try panacur, i went back today and took the panacur with me for her to show me the dosage and she said dont start it hes better with an ultrasound to rule things out first. This is why i was confused because i thought its normally, urine test, panacur, blood test, and any antibiotics if infection show in urine or blood, the ultasound/x-ray last. If he has to have ultrasound/x-ray i dont mind paying but i would rather see the specialist and get advise from her before putting him through all that. It may turn out she wants to try all that but im sure she will be confidant and not forget what she had proposed re treatment the week before.
I have some mini clippers with different ends that i might try, thanks everyone just want him to get better.

Yes I would agree with you W&S.

I had thought she did a urine test before the Baytril but I guess it must've looked like textbook UTI to her. I have found the urine specimens that are obtained by the vet (not at home, possibly contaminated) and sent off to the lab are the best source of info. They are a bit more expensive (I think mine was £80). But it can eliminate a lot of things. Also, I personally see no harm in starting Panacur right away, as if it's implicated, surely the sooner you start treating the better?

I hope you get a urine test which shows the correct antibiotic (if that's the case) and some definitive diagnosis, rather than shooting in the dark. I was only happy to give Propalin to a rabbit when the urine had been properly tested and a blood test eliminated any kidney issues.

Wishing you loads of good luck, and a healthy bank balance xx

rutland house has rang, Blitzen has had appointment with molly varga of friday  Cant believe how quick its been. I asked on the phone how much is the consult and its £90, guess the little fluff ball is going to cost me a fortune. Im that worried i think i will get a loan and ive never had any debt ever not even a catalog, my mum will be disappointed lol.. she brought me up to never get anything i cant pay straight out for, Blitzen is special circumstances though, i will have to see how i go. A bit of worry has lifted though with all the nice things people have said about her on here.

I know how you feel. I have never had anything I couldn't pay for outright.

But you're right, Blitzen is a special case and I hope Molly gives you some great advice/treatment. Friday is wonderfully close :D

I'm glad you've got an appointment for Friday. I'm sure you will get good advice from Molly Varga. She has such a good reputation and I would feel so reassured by seeing her if I were in your position. It's a shame that it's £90, but hopefully there won't be too many expensive extras on top of that.

I thought at the time im just better putting money away instead but it always seems to be needed for something. If its not a bun its one of my labradors. Ive got a bit saved so can pay for consult and initial treatment if needed, and still save more so not too bad yet.

This insurance lark is always such a difficult topic. No one can advise, as none of us (so far as I know) have crystal balls. But usually with multiple rabbits the cost of insurance outweighs the possible benefits. Also, from what you've said about your vet, it may be as well to find one that gives good honest value, and make it clear you are not made of money :D

Molly really is brilliant and she has a great team around her too, especially Craig who took such good care of Hiro when he was in for his TECA.
She is expensive but in my opinion she is worth every penny if you get the answers you need.
Good luck for Friday xxx
