UPDATE Dental rabbit still not eating after teeth being done

Raisin is currently having regular denials, until recently as regularly as fort nightly. We were referred to Seers Croft in Horsham to see Rob, who has been fantastic. She has now been put on a hay only diet and has been put on metacam long term. This time she managed to go a month without needing them doing, definitely a move in the right direction.
Before we made the decision to keep her on the metacam long term, we had gradually tried to take her off it. We began this three weeks after her dental after seeing she had made good progress at grinding her teeth down after being on the hay only diet,. A couple of days after stopping the metacam completely she began not wanting to eat as much. My normal vet and Rob both suggested we put her back on the pain killer and monitor her closely to see if she picked up. This did seem to help and she was picking at food but still not herself.
I decided on Wednesday to have her teeth done as on the Tuesday night she had not wanted to eat at all. So fast forward to today, her teeth have been done but she has still not picked back up. Usually after a dental she is back to her normal self in a couple of days.
She is currently on 1ml metacam twice daily, 0.3ml cisapride three times a day. I have also been giving her 2mls infacol three times daily. I am syringing 20 ml critical care and 30ml water every 2-3 hours and doing this through the night also. Her stomach is very loud and gurgly so i have been massaging that for her. In herself she goes between sitting very quietly to seeming very restless and digging up bedding and not seeming to be able to get comfortable. She sometimes picks at hay in the afternoon but then gradually stops through the day. She is still pooing but only a small amount and they are small and mishapen, one was also three poos in a little chain.
We are back off to the vets this morning and I am just wondering what else I should be asking or doing? I'm getting increasingly worried about her and at a lose as to what I should be doing or if I'm doing the right thing at all?
Thank you so much if you have read this far! Just want my bunny back!

It sounds like the stress of the dental has slowed her gut down so she will probably need a gut stimulant to get it working again. Someone else will be along with more advice shortly.

Just got back from the vets, she surprisingly hasn't lost any weight. He had a thorough feel of her stomach and says he can't feel any impact ion and although it feels empty, it's soft and she doesn't appear dehydrated. Her gut also sounds ok, so that's good. He's given her an injection of Metoclopramide so hopefully that will help. She's going tomorrow for another injection of the same too. In the mean time he said to carry on with what I'm doing currently. I've got a camera fitted out in their shed so at least I can monitor her closely, . Fingers crossed she picks up soon.

Woo hoo she's eating grass as we speak! Who knew seeing a rabbit eat could make you so happy. Really, really hope she continues improving.

So I recognise this pattern, and I am sorry to hear it in Raisin's case.

Can I ask whether head X-rays have ever been taken? I have found that when this happens, there's more going on than meets the eye.

Also, what happens during the dental - is it spurs that are filed down, or are all the crowns reduced because they have grown and don't allow normal chewing?

Sorry for all the questions. You obviously want to get to the bottom of all this.

Last one - how old is Raisin?

Last one - how old is Raisin?

Hi Mighty Max, Raisin is coming up 2 so not old at all. When she has a dental it is her lower, back teeth that are filed. They almost look like a ski ramp that is then sharp and presses into her tongue. I did query x-rays with the specialist but was told that they weren't always necessary as usually how you treated the teeth didn't really change even after looking at x-rays, if that makes sense? Raisin seems withdrawn again so I have syringed her more cisapride and emperid and done another round of critical care. She was eating for England earlier.

Raisin has been back to the vets this morning and had another injection of metoclopramide. She has amazingly put on a tiny bit of weight, so at least that's good. He said she also feels nicely hydrated.
The metoclopramide works really well for her, however after 4-6 hours she slowly doesn't eat again. After she has had a dose her appetite is great, just relatively short lived. For that reason she is now having 2ml three times a day. So, she is now on:
cisapride 0.3ml 3 times daily
metoclopramide 2ml three times daily
metacam 1ml twice daily

When she is eating I leave her to it and just syringe some fluids. If her eating then slows down, I syringe some critical care as a supportive measure. Does this sound like a good regime?

I do agree that vets often won't do dental X-rays, and probably for exactly the reason you've stated, that it won't alter the treatment.

From my experience though, if there seems to be an insoluble issue, I insist of them having one X-ray, to rule out any oddities that really aren't apparent during a normal dental.

Raisin is a young whippersnapper, and I really hope she recovers fast :thumb:

I think what I might do then when Raisin is feeling better is pursue her having x-rays. Even if it doesn't change the treatment, surely they can do no harm? She's insured so it makes sense to cover all bases.
Raisin is feeling a lot better today, I think the combination and frequency of medication has really helped. She's had quite an appetite all day, fingers crossed she continues to pick up.
