  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Making arthritic bunny more comfortable

You should be able to get it easily online or through a vet surgery (though may be more expensive) :thumb: It gives a good soft grip and if there's any wee (because of not getting to the litter tray) it allows the moisture through and bunny doesn't end up laying on wet towels etc ...
Oh ok! Thanks heaps for the advice :) I'll try search for some online.

How's your little one today, did you increase the metacam? My rabbit weights 1.3kg and by way of example when she was ill the exotic vet specialist subscribed 0.5ml 3 times a day then dropped it down to twice a day. I'm not saying you should go up to this but just to let you know you won't be over dosing and my specialist gave a talk about a month ago saying lots of vet undersubscribe and rabbits are still in pain so sometimes when they are referred to him all he does is increase the dose then they're fine. You'll probably notice a difference once your rabbit is pain free.

If you split the dose your giving now it's so low I doubt it would take much pain away.

Hello! I dont think my bunny is doing very well :( he just went for another visit to the vet today and he lost another 100 grams since he was put on medication! (Losing nearly 200 grams since we went to see the vet about his wobbliness). And an hour ago I found a bit of stringy mucousy blood in his poop 0.0 which I made another post about... He's still eating and pooing normally though. Do I need to take him to the vet tomorrow?

Is your vet rabbit savvy as I think you may to see a specialist if not as losing weight and the under dosage of metacam would concern me.

I don't know about blood in his poop but again I would be concerned and take him today if possible to the vets. I'm thinking he is in pain and probably isn't eating as much as usual due to his weight lose. He may need some blood tests and other tests to find out what is happening. The only thing I can think it could be is muccoid enteritis or EC but others on here will have more of an idea them me!

It's definitely strange that he's getting worse even when the vet i take him to is specialised for rabbits and guinea pigs only-so I'm sure they're very rabbit savvy.
Ill give them a ring up tomorrow because he's due in for xrays on Thursday so maybe he needs to be in earlier than that.
I was thinking maybe it might be something to do with the fluids he got today?

I would definitely get him back there and also speak about pain relief. Whereabouts are you based? They may need to do blood tests too.

Doughnut has been on an IV drip before and has never had blood/mucus in her poo so I don't think it's related.

I'm in Melbourne and the vet I got to is called the Melbourne Rabbit clinic.
He got a blood test two weeks ago and everything was fine with a little higher reading on the kidney enzymes (which the vet believes is due to weight lost and not bad kidneys)but do you think things would have changed over two weeks?

I'm afraid I really don't know but I would be concerned about the blood. Hopefully someone who has had experience with this type of thing will come along and comment.

I don't think the fluids would be at all connected with blood in the poos.

With all due respect to your vet, there is a *big* difference between a rabbit savvy vet (who treats all animals but is especially good with rabbits) and a dedicated specialist who spends their time treating rabbits all day long. A specialist will get to the heart of a problem, and save you time and money (and angst for your little one) in the long run. Where there is a problem your vet is stumped on, I would turn to a specialist for advice.

It may be that your vet is indeed a specialist, in which case I would trust them to know exactly what they are doing and have a plan for the future care of your rabbit, whatever that may be.

Ok I think I'll trust my vet because she looks at only rabbits all day and knows a lot - thanks for your advice!
And thanks for writing on the other thread :)
