Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Weepy/wet eye. U/D

Alpha Buck
Last night noticed one of my buns had a wet left eye but both buns had been spraying during the evening (booked in to be spayed on the 17th) so thought she may have just caught some of her sisters spray as I wiped it clean and no more sign of it, so my OH has been checking them all day today and no sign of a weepy eye until 8pm tonight ( same time as last night but no spraying obvious) again cleaned it up and now no sign of weepy eye!

When cleaning the eye the fluid is clear almost like a tear so is this maybe due to a tear duct being blocked? But why only at 8pm as nothing changes at this time?

She is eating lots of hay and is totally herself. No crusty ness around the eye and not pink or swollen, she is so easy to handle that I have been able to try to pull the top and bottom eyelid back but can't see anything although not really sure what I am looking for if it's a bit of hay in there!

I am working all day tomorrow but I have Friday off, so should I ring vets for advice, or just make an appointment for Friday or is that leaving it too late? Bun doesn't seem to notice it, not rubbing/ cleaning her eye so don't think it's irritating her.

Any advice would be gladly received.

It's best to get it checked asap because my Dillon had a weepy eye and it was a hay husk. The Vet removed it but also checked for corneal damage, so this is why it is so important. Luckily he didn't have any damage phew!

My Blossom's eye was weeping the other day, so we booked him into the vets and he had a dental and an Xray today as they found sharp spurs leading into an ulcer. Best to get your bunny checked - Most likely just an irritation but it's better to be safe x

I would get it checked out and keep a close eye on her for signs of pain. I think Friday is soon enough as long as she is otherwise fine.

Could be the start of snuffles, could be an eye infection or irritation from something, or if could just be a response to pain, most likely dental pain. Try not to worry until you know more.

Are they indoor or outdoor?

Going to ring the vets in the morning and get her checked.

No weepy eye all day and then again about 8 pm it was weepy but again nothing since and OH has been checking on her every hour all day again today.

She had her teeth checked on the 31st Dec only by the vet looking in her mouth but no signs of problems at that point. No sign of pain and she is eating really well.

She was vaccinated 10 days ago so could that be a cause?

They are outside bunnies but we can see them from the back door and we go out to check them and spend time with them all the time.

Do you bring them indoors in the evening? Perhaps, if you do, it is something connected with that.

Have been to the vets, he gave her a really good examination, checked tear duct was clear, put some dye in her eye and we could see straight away that she has a scratch on her eye. Have been given some drops to use to help stop the irritation and incase there is any infection.

He was really good, explained everything really clearly, handled her confidently and made me feel I could really trust him with my bunnies.

This is the first time I have had to take them to the vets for anything that is not routine so was really pleased to have such a rabbit savvy vet :D
