i cant bear hutches, i hate the things.. if i did (very not likely) ever banish my buns outside i would no way shape or form have a hutch :lol:

i like sheds and playhouses tho, the setups ive seen on here are amazing.:love:

I agree with you. We had a hutch before they came indoors and the amount of work to clean it out. Horrible. Horrible, horrible, horrible. The sheds and that on here look absolutely amazing though!

the whole point of this thread is that it really doesn't matter if you choose to keep your bunsters indoors or outdoors.

Oh, I'm sorry. Its just cause the thread was titled Inside or Outside - which sounds like it was asking for opinions. And then the OP asked what we all thought. So I said what I thought - which is that I think it does matter.

I would also like to say that I suffer badly from excema, asthma and hayfever. My guinea pigs and bun are in my bedroom. Yes I may be mad, but so long as I slather my self in cream, take a hayfever tablet, try not to handle the hay too much, and use my puffer twice daily I cope. And my animals are all inside with me. Ultimately I would have them in a seperate room of the house and not in my bedroom, but unfortunatley it is not possible as this house is too small (and I also have 2 dogs who are indoors).

Anyway, Charlee and the guinea pigs must clearly be depressed. Living indoors and all. Let alone the fact that Charlee is bouncing at my feet and the pigs wheeking from their cage cause they want dinner (in between fits of pop corn/zoomie sessions - for those that don't have guinea pigs, popcorning is like binkying). So I best go get it.

Clearly my Smudge is terribly unhappy indoors as he is doing mad mad binkies a foot off the ground. ;)

Mine actually arn't fussed about going outside. My lops love it because they love their tummies and just eat grass all the time, but they don't get out there and suddenly binky all over the place. In fact in the past my lionheads have gone out there and spent half an hour in their carrier  refusing to come out.

Indoors we share space. They can have masses of room because they share my bedroom and the landing and soon they will be able to share the study room.

Indoors works for us. It might not work for anyone else, but it does for us. I think my rabbits get far better lives living indoors than they could outdoors in this area.

Wispa, my old houserabbit, used to have the run of the whole house with a GSD and a Border Collie . She came to live indoors because she was a bit sickly and her shedmates started to pick on her :(. She still enjoyed time in the garden but appeared to be equally happy indoors :).

As long as you and your bunnies are happy with their environment, I wouldn't give two hoots what anyone else says :D.

Haha, I agree! Believe it or not, when I was first new to guinea pigs (way before Charlee), they were outdoors. In a hutch. It was a horrible thing to clean, being wood and all. The pigs were getting sick all the time, and I didn't spend nearly as much time with them as I do now. But I learnt - from educated people with many years experience with small animals (most in the rescue area), my exotic specialist vet and from experience, and as a result they have all come inside and have developed so much as a result (and no vet bills for over 2 years - except for Acorn's nueter and Charlee's spay).

My personal preference is outdoors, but it really depends on the rabbit.

If I had a single bun, an ill bun, or an elderly/infirm bun then I've no problem with them being indoors.

Fortunately most of mine are fit and healthy at the mo, and they all live outdoors, although they have insulated and heated sheds for the winter.

Come winter Oscar and his new partner will most likely move back inside as he won't be fit enough to manage the cold.

I don't have a problem with that. If your opinion is that pets should be kept indoors - great! But I don't think someone else is wrong for saying they should be outdoors. In MY opinion, there is no right or wrong place for them to live - each situation is different.

Cor - it's hard sitting on this fence  - especially since I have some small furries who live inside and some who live outside :lol:.

QUOTE]

People will start to eat me now  But here in Oz most cages are wooden for Rabbits and guinea pigs. I have mine indoors and I enjoy cleaning mine out, remove the blankets, drybed, wipe out the cage and put fresh bedding in. I only have one guinea pig now who has recently had surgery and we lost Faline the bunny in May 2010 But it only takes 20 minutes to clean piggy out and 30 minutes to clean Faline out.
Hubby made our cages and we find them easy to clean, Hay is in the rack and bedding blankets and drybed.
The other forum I believe is based in the USA, BUT they were of the opinion if you don't keep domestic furries and birds inside then you were neglecting them. Can you imagine if you have an avairy of say Budgies around 50 of them, would you then move them inside?
Many thanks to all who have replied! Mackers you can now climb off the fence

My bunnies are outside, they free range all day in the garden and are shut in a shed with access to an outside run during the night. They seem (obviously they can't actually tell me) very happy, and just get on with being rabbits. Grazing, grooming, sleeping, exploring etc. Whilst I love the idea of a house rabbit ie it being there for a cuddle all the time, for me it would be for selfish reasons, not with the rabbits interests at heart. I feel that rabbits aren't domesticated to the same extent that say, dogs are, and it wouldn't be fair to treat them the same.

If indoor bunnies works for you and your bunny is happy and healthy then wonderful. I think it's a bit of a cheek to say that keeping them outside is wrong though!

BTW, as people have mentioned piggies as well, mine are indoors, I would never keep pigs outdoors purely because of the temperatures we have here. Too hot in the summer, too cold in winter or even just during the night.

I think providing the environment is safe, stimulating and spacious either would be ok. I voted for outside though, as I like the idea of keeping things as close to natural as possible. Mine are really happy outside ! However, being kept in a hutch outside is not an option I'd ever think was good, now I've seen how much my bunneeee loves a large playhouse and large run (and free time), I can't imagine having a hutch-living animal ever again.

Whichever suits the rabbits and owners best.

I would personally always try rabbits outside because I think it's such a nice environment. If I had a nice spacious set up with a shaded area on hot days and an insulated area on cold days I think I'd like to be outside all the time!

There is an arguement on another forum I belong to that ALL rabbits should be indoors and anyone who keeps them outdoors is neglecting them. They claim rabbits or any domesticated animal does better indoors than outddors.
I was just wondering what you all think?

Which forum just wondering cuz i am looking for other rabbit forums?

I have a question. I'm not trying to be argumentative but it's something that just popped into my brain.

Those of you who say outside is better. Would you / Do you shut your rabbits away at nighttime?

Can I just ask why? I know you're not the only one to say this but you seemed the most passionate!

My rabbits are being moved in to a shed/run when I move house but this is purely because I will find it easier to catch them. At the moment they are in a hutch which is over a run with another run attached and I have to say I love the set up. If we weren't changing to the shed I would make the attached run larger but altogether I think their home is brilliant and very well suited to us and them. It's spacious, levels for them to explore, easy to clean out, you can see them all the time and it's quite an attractive thing to have in the garden. I don't see what benefits they will get in their shed that they wouldn't get in their current home.

I'm trying not to sound defensive or argumentative here so sorry if I have, I'm just genuinely curious why you're so against the idea!

outside is my preference and no, I don't shut them away at night time. Their runs are lined with foxproof wire and everything is bolted, it's also very unlikely that we would have any predators in our garden.

they look like coffins/prisons to me, dark and dingy, i dont like the ones that sit on tiny little runs either, just makes me feel sad when i see them.. even the massive ones just look too much like a prison/coffin to me.

also when they are used they look scruffy (says me who hates tidy):oops:

cant explain it really, human emotions added id not want to live in one if i was to become an animal. but i reakon id like a shed or playhouse with a nice catflap and run

I voted doesnt matter...
Ive had both - preferably I would have mine inside but I have had to move them out due to space! im now pregnant so the spare room isnt an option anymore and I have a dog so they could not run freely downstairs.
If they were ill or didnt like it outside - i would find somewhere for them - I have Mittens / Charlie inside at the moment...

Outside I have a shed and 2 runs - (i also hate hutches ) I have made the shed home from home - so with mats / carpet / lino - almost exactly what they had inside! I have also noticed they are a lot more relaxed outside - probably because it was quite noisy inside and any little noise would disturb them, they also love laying in the sun..

I dont think there is a right or wrong - whereever they have the most space, the right conditions etc etc

just wanted to add i equally disliked the dog crate i had... it felt too prison like. my house cage is open plan and just feels huge and i love the light it gets being so open.

I dont think outside is better but im planning on shutting mine in the shed at night time - as it has 2 padlocks and bolts and so I can sleep at night - I think i would be up everytime I hear a noise!!
