Wise Old Thumper
I am worried about my little old man Kenco. He is 8 and a half. He has been losing weight over the last few months and this is usually a sign of him needing a dental. He last had a dental in around September time. We started to feed him and Buttercup separately, and been giving Kenco lots more pellets than usual, softened down with water. More recently we have also been adding Protexin Profibre to these as well to help put weight on and help his tummy.
We booked him in for a dental last week with our regular vet and she took some spurs off from him but needed to refer him to a more specialised bunny dental vet because his mouth is so uneven due to malocclusion. Last week his weight was 1.7kg and he is usually 2.4kg. I've also noticed that as well as losing weight all over he seems to have lost muscle tone around his back end. So I wanted him to be tested again for EC. He had been positive in the past. He has always had trouble with urinating so I do sometimes wonder if, despite treatment, we never completely eradicated the EC? Anyway last week she couldnt get blood for him - both she and we were in a rush so he is going back on New Year's Eve for a follow-up and she will do blood tests then.
So today he has had a thorough dental and his teeth taken right down with the specialist dental vet. He will go back to see this vet in a month's time. She agreed the priority was to get weight on him - he has gone up to 1.8kg which at least is a tiny step in the right direction. Poor little thing.
The other worry I have about him is that his eyes have started to become more blue/pearlised, in particular his left eye seems to be half-covered by a pearly-blue coloured mist and I am now worried that he is going blind in that eye, which again is making me think EC? But of course could just be down to his old age.
Its unbearable seeing my little man aging and getting old. But more than anything I just want him to be comfortable and have good quality of life. I can't bear the thought of him being disorientated, cold and hungry. He has a large kennel with Buttercup and a snugglehouse in one corner with lots of straw where they snuggle at night-time (and during the day), we don't move things around in their house so that he can keep familiar with the layout.
Please does anyone have any tips or advice for how we can keep Kenco comfortable and happy as he moves in to old age? I am so worried for him, he seemed so young and lively still in the summer and this deterioration seems to have just happened in the last couple of months.
