  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Weight up and down?

smudgiebun

Alpha Buck
Can rabbits weight go up and down throughout the year? We've been regularly weighing Smudge for the last year and noticed a pattern where her weight goes down in the spring then up again as the year progresses.

Mine all used to put on weight in Spring - I think me & them getting excited about all the fresh forage. Is Smudgie an indoor or outdoor bun? Does she get Spring Fever & get particularly active?

Mine get weighed several times a week and can vary considerably between days! But for most grazing animals it is normal for weight to fluctuate with the seasons, and the prime time for losing weight is around February I find. It shouldn't in theory happen with house rabbits who have a consistent diet and temperature, but they might still respond to the seasons even so.

She is an indoor bun and quite old with some health conditions, but otherwise quite content.

The only issue a vet brought up last year is that her breathing could be using up a lot of energy as she breathes quite heavily.

Perhaps this isn't actually a yearly pattern, as I only have 1 year of data, not several to compare. Also last year at this point I was weighing her every couple of days whereas now I am only weighing once a week or so.
