Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Update: RIP Romeo <3

I'm worried he might be injured guys and I'm not happy with check up when I lay him on his back he twists and jerks. He looks normal unless on his back. Could his spine be injured??
Bunnies don't like being put on their back anyway as they think it is 'prey' that put them on their back. My little Storm is only ever put on his back when it is absolutely necessary and he despises it, twisting and kicking about so you're little man could just be doing the same. If you're not happy with the results of the check up then you can always ask for the opinion of another vet though.

http://youtu.be/01rVPLW-vqk this is what happened when I lay him on his back. Do you think he's injured? I usually lay all my rabbits on their back him included and they enjoy being cuddled and stroked that way. I'm worried he might be injured yet he's walking and running round fine with no wobbles or injuries but he was twisted here and jerking his head even tho he was lain still that hasn't happened before xx
I would advise not laying your bunnies on their backs anymore unless for health reasons where you have to check their bums or tummies and can't do so any other way. Although the look like they are enjoying it, they quite simply are not. They literally freeze in fear and their heart rates slow down whilst they are on their back, however once you turn them back over again their heart rate dramatically increases again as they prepare to run away (like what they would so in the wild).

They have found another problem they don't know is linked or not. I don't know how I didn't notice they said unless I thought to check under his fur I wouldn't notice. He's covered head to toe his skin in leisons, bumps and scabs. They don't know what it is but he's being treat for parasite. They want him to be seen by their exotic pets specialist next week but I'd have to travel there and I don't drive xx

I think it's a good idea for him to be seen by a specialist. As I said, my vet is rabbit savvy, but she admitted she had never treated a bunny with seizures and the second time I went back, she was at a complete loss ... So I think don't waste time and get him to a specialist. Can someone drive you there, or can you get a cab?

Yes, this is very good advice. I think getting your Rabbit examined by a Rabbit Savvy Vet would be a good idea as that really is the only way you are going to establish exactly what is going on.

My rabbits love being on their back always have, it comforts them, they are very happy with it, that's the first time that's ever happened with any of them, its always been their comfort since 8 weeks old as ive had them along time, i often cuddle them like babies and have many photos of them all happy and relaxed straight on their backs including my little one, this only happened since last night but he might be frightened from last night or from vets which might be why he did that on his back but it's definitely not something any of my rabbits dislike as Id not do it otherwise.

My rabbits do it enjoy it but thanks for concern and i dont appreciate the judgement, all animals are different. When my phoebe was terrified, in shock etc and suffering from breathing problems i lay her neatly on her back in my arms and she calmed instantly, breathing restored, ive done it ever since and she finds it very comforting and even kisses me :) so please dont judge my animals not every one is the same. Thank you and i wont stop doing it as i know my rabbits more then anyone. If he continues to do that yes i will stop but it has never been an issue before with him.. but obviously if its turned into one, i will know hes my bunny and i will know when hes in discomfort automatically.. bunny mummys intuition and i dont ask for judgement on what i do with my rabbits as i am very in tune with them and they are very loving and love me very much so i cant be doing anything wrong when i hold them, they kiss me, come for cuddles etc every single one of them so i have no concerns :) and obviously if hes decided he doesnt like it, i wont do it anymore but please unless you know my rabbits, dont pass judgement on how i handle them.

Yeah i will try see the specialist just not sure when i will be able to. its a long drive so id not be able to afford a cab but i will definitely get him there but im hoping hes okay, they are suspecting a parasite and hes being treat for that so hopefully that clears it up and if not we'll manage whatever is thrown our way but he was perfectly fine with vet today and his main concern was the leisons on his back. Xx

I really hope things are sorted for you both. I can't imagine what you're going through. I was horrified just reading it. I panic if mine even sneeze and always assume the worst but its only because we live them like babies. I'll be checking back for an update.

I wasn't judging you about it, I was just saying that a lot of bunnies look like they are enjoying in and look very calm when in reality they're not. The reason they often stop panicking etc is because they quite literally freeze in fear. No-one here is trying to judge you at all as we all care a huge amount about our bunnies and other people's bunnies, but as you have seen we also care about each other as we know how stressful and heart breaking certain situations can be. I will simply stating what virtually all research suggests but if you are confident that your bunnies are several of the very few bunnies that do enjoy it then I'm actually envious of you and you are very lucky haha. Just remember that no-one here is judging or targeting you and that we're all just trying to be there for you and help :) x

Thank you :)

It seemed like judgement. I will never put harm upon my rabbits and my rabbits are the most loving tentative rabbits who adore me. I can cuddle them hours and they will enjoy it the whole time. If they disliked it as you say they would fight me, they would run from me and they most certainly wouldn't let me hold them. I know them inside out. I know that they hate being picked up so their legs are dangling, I know how they hate being held, hate being picked up, I know what they dislike and like. My eldest has been with me nearly 3 years now. My middle 2 years she's been with me and she adores lying on her back more then any, I've done it since she was around 6 weeks old. She loves it, its a comfort for her as a little bunny who was dying and for me who saved her life. She sees it as a comfort. I can cuddle and rock them like babies no matter how bizarre that seems, they love being on their belly lay on my chest too. Its just them and who they are. I know all their dislikes and likes. If you dare try pick them up wrong they run for the hills so i always teach people how to pick them up and how to hold them, dont ever let their legs dangle when holding, i know them inside out and i love my animals so much i notice every tiny detail. I always will. I have had rabbits hate it in the past but i know my rabbits and will always know them better then anyone, i'm a good pet owner i notice everything even the minute details and i have seen them freeze in fear before.

Its like my cats.. cats are meant to hate water... Marvel adores bubble baths... He plays in the bubbles and water whilst im bathing.. Cats are meant to hate having their belly scratched.. my kitten Marla adores having her belly scratched.. no animal is the same and you cant go off research. .. you go off what is best for your pets and learn whats best for them because none of them will be the same. Also cats are meant to hater hoovers and all mine have in the past.. well Marvel loves the hoover and tries to catch it when im hoovering. I will always use my instinct on the animal.. pay attention to the animal and its needs.. i never research these things because it is down to the animal what they like and what they dislike.. its not down to us as humans to decide that. We learn from our animals.. they don't learn from us.

I dont think anyone here is 'judging' you, we are just passing on information of which you may be unaware :) How you choose to handle your Rabbits is up to you, but perhaps you might find time to take a look at these links:

You have mentioned that your Rabbit is now being treated for 'a parasite', I assume that you mean EC (Encephalitozoon Cuniculi) ? One symptom of EC can be seizures. Hopefully your Vet explained the implications of the condition and that any in contact Rabbits also need to be treated ?

There is some useful information about EC here:

No no, I'm not here to judge and it sounds like you know your babies down to a tee :) I only mentioned it as some rabbit owners are very very inexperienced and need to have these sorts of things mentioned as they will have had no clue, but I can see that you definitely aren't inexperienced :)

And I know, two of my cats love belly rubs too bless them haha.

Sorry to hear your bunny is unwell, it must be awful to witness.

One of my rabbits is currently undergoing treatment and my vet has suggested I see a specialist if there is no improvement with what they've suggested, and like you I don't drive, and I can't use public transport as it is too far away so I was considering a taxi as if that's what he needs then I will get him there but the vet said I could have him admitted into my normal practice and they will drive him over to the practice where the specialist works. I will just be charged the usual price for whatever treatment/consultation he is given at the specialists so none extra for travelling even though I offered. Is this something your vets could arrange if they have regular contact with the specialist?

Rebecca, you are very experienced with rabbits, and as I said in my first post, I do not judge you in any way!

Please feel free to PM me if I can be of support, as I have experienced rabbits having seizures.

There are such conflicting views on putting rabbits on their backs for various reasons. Sometimes vets even advocate this when it's indicated :)

Thanks for the links :)

Yeah he is, not sure which one, vet wasn't thorough, wasn't my usual vet going to take him in next week to see my usual vet but he said the scabs and lesions on his body could be parasite. He was covered head to toe, not sure how I didn't realise. He's on medication for that now anyways at least and he's had skin stuff in case its mites which is possible because my Phoebe had mites and she's cured as is my eldest but probably still carries them.

I have had rabbits years, so not inexperienced, thanks though :) I had two rabbits in my teenage years who hated being held full stop! Haha xx

And I'm not sure in regards to transport to the vet specialist. I am going to take him into see my regular vet and see her opinion as she's also really good with rabbits and then go from there. She might offer an ambulance service as she has done that before where he stays overnight and gets checked over. But this man wasn't my usual vet so it might just be i need to see my normal one to pull some strings! xx

Yeah, probably wise to start there :)

I hope get some answers xx

Does anyone have any ideas what scabs would be all over his back and body, he was given mite treatment and he's on panacur but I went in to check on him before and there's more scabs on him now then there was before. I separated him from my other rabbit a few days ago so it's definitely nothing she's doing, some huge ones seemed to have appeared over night, anyone have any idea??

I know rabbits and cats are obviously different, but my cat gets covered in scabs due to allergies from where she scratches and sometimes they can be quite big.

Can you post a photo of the scabs ?

Did the vet give any theory as to what the scabs were?

Without seeing them, I can't really voice an opinion. It sounds like maybe he's scratching? Has the vet checked him for fleas as well?

A rarer condition but maybe possible might be sebaceous adenitis. One of my bunnies had this years ago. It was difficult to diagnose & treat.

It may be worth asking your vet to consider a skin biopsy if it is presenting as neither mites / fleas/ allergy
