Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Unhealing wound. (hello everyone!)

New Kit
Hello everyone. This is also my introduction..
I have two rabbits. One is a blue/gray dwarf/minirex that I recused from Petland 6.5 years ago. He is blind in one eye from birth and has servere malacusion. My other one is an albino notreallysurekindalop rabbit which I got out of the paper 7 years ago. These two are my babies! =] Both male. Neither are fixed so they are caged and let out both seperately. they are indoors.
So, here is my problem. My albino, which has never had health problems, is now sick. Well, kinda. Last summer he developed redness on the bottem of his feet. I assumed this was sore hocks. Which I don't know how. I always use carefresh and carpet. But then an abcess came and it looked infected and scared me. So, we called the vet and my normal one was not in. So, my mom took him anyways. The lady removed the abcess, but just ripping it off. And he bleed and then had to have it wrapped. She didn't give me any medicine or anything. The actually spot healed up slighty but moved onto the side of his leg. Like spread out. So, I took him on a day my regular vet was there. He gave me some cream. We tried this and he chew the wound. Made it a big hole. So, then he was put out and had his skin streched and stiched and wrapped. Two weeks later the stiches were removed and the skin just flapped back and didn't seal at all. So, then it was cultured for pasterella. Negitave. Then sent out for more testing. He had a staff infection. Now he is on antibotics. It's been about a month. And nothing new has happened. The vet said the infection is gone and it's now bleeding like a real wound. It was dead skin in the past. But it's still not grasping and sealing together. So, today I was told to drive to see a speacialist and get an opinion. His only other one was to remove the leg. But he said the shock on a rabbit could kill him.
So, thats my story. I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or anything? Cost is not a problem here. And putting him down is not even an opinion. He is totally healthy otherwise and has nooo problem dragging and flipping that cast around! He has been so strong! I have an appointment to the rabbit dr Thursday. And it's about an hour and a half drive.
Please give us your hope and support or suggestions!!

I am sorry to hear about your Rabbit

Have radiographs been taken to see if infection has spread into bone ?

If this were to be the case I am affraid the prognosis is very poor

Is you Rabbit receiving any pain relief and what is the name of the antibiotics he is on ?

If there really is no active infection now but the wound just wont knit together/granulate/heal then a skin graft may be an option. I am not sure I would subject an elderly Rabbit to that though :?

I'm afraid I can't be of much help here, but I'm sending all the vibes I can for a good, healthy recovery for your little bun! I hope all goes well, welcome to RU and please keep us updated!!

Hi everyone.
Thank you for the replies!
Right now he is on Bactrim, half a dropper twice a day. I'm thinking the skin graft would be a good idea too. But noone has really suggested it. They suggested removing the leg. But if the wound won't heal who says his leg would where they remove it? I do to the specialist in the morning. I'm really nervous. Esp having a car ride for a little over an hour! Any advice on that? I usally put him in a large carrier. With a blanket and toys.

Oh and also to JacksJane, he has no pain relief. They do put him out everytime that change the bandage. But other than that just his medicine. I was so scared the first time, because he had never gone out. I never got him fixed because of that fear. But he does great! The vet said he trys to stand up flings his head around and reaches over his food bowl everytime. They love him there. I think it's playtime when he goes, lol. They also play with his toys and stuff. He usually stays half a day when he goes just in case. He's so strong. If he acted in pain putting down would be talked about. But he acts no diffeerent! Except for the obsessive trying to get the bandage off attitude.

Hi everyone. I'm updating.. yesterday we had to put him down.. trust me, it's the hardest thing I have EVER done in my life.
So we went to the specialist, over an hour away, trip was fine. They said I had two choices. One was to keep him there for two weeks so they could do regular bandage changes to try to heal the tissuse back. There was a 50/50 chance this would happen. Other choice was to remove the leg. Each one was the same price. but if one didn't work I would have to go to two anyways. So, she cleaned it out and let me see it. The hole was bigger than I last seen two months ago. It was full of puss. And crusty. It was like it was just rotting off. So, I said to just remove it. Get rid of the infection. He already knew how to walk on three. And I didn't want him living somewhere else for two weeks get stressed and then have to go through the surgery anyways.
Well during surgery first 15min he coded out. I signed papers to revive him if that happened. They did, but his heart was gone 10min. When he woke he was in so much pain from the cpr and stuff he was on serveral meds. They said if he ate he could go home. So we waited. I called every 3 hours, even at night. It never got better, or worse. Then they told me he still was not getting up the next day and he could have had brain damage, because he was not getting up. But mind you he's on like four pain meds dripping in his system! They said his digestive system would get bad, so I need to get a feeding tube down him so that doesn't shut down. By night they were suggesting to put him down. I'm sorry, but I have never ever believed in doing that to animals. The dr told me if only I could see him I would understand he is not there anymore. So, we went up to vist. In a snow storm. He was not as bad a shape as they made it sound. Although he couldn't stand, all three legs were out. One eye was frozen looking up and his mouth couldn't move. He had two iv's, a cathiter, and a feeding tube. And was being housed in an oxygen box. They let me hold him for awhile. Actually when they brought him out he crawled to me and laid his head down. His ears responded when I rubbed his checks. He even tried to stand up, but would hold his rib area and fall down. So, yeah something was going on. I'm not sure if it was actual brain damage or just doped up so bad. I told the vet I wanted 24 more hours and they said ok. Yeah well morning came and she tells me I need to decide now. His nose started bleeding. His feeding tube stuff was running out of his mouth, his body was not accepting it. And his breathing was bad, his lungs were filling up. So, what choice did I have? They did it over the phone. And we got him a few hours later.
Now, I'm not trying to be mean to the place, they did keep him alive with his state of condiction. But just two days ago he was running around with his keys and rubbing on me and healthy. I think if they knew that past 5min could mean brain damage they should have called and asked me if I wanted to continue the surgery. And if they knew his muscles couldn't move they knew he wouldn't except that feeding tube. I wanted his pain meds brought down. If he is in pain then maybe he would try harder and wake up or he would just turn for the worse, but we would know how brain damaged. But they said no that was cruel and kept uping it. They had to approve my credit card before we went and lets just say I had a couple thousand and when I left I now have $1.02 so I feel cheated. My bunny meant the world to me. There was NO price on him. But I feel they knew the damage and kept going til I had used all my money. They mad eme decided at 7am, and 9am would have been a new day another charge. Which I didn't tell them, but I was going to start paying out of the pocket then. But otherwise, the surgery went well with the leg. The infection was gone. They said the leg gone would freak me out. Actually it looked really good. I felt relived he didn't have to deal with it anymore. But he didn't make it.
Thank you all for reading this. Life is NOT the same. And I'm still just shocked he is not here with me..

I am so sorry to read about your loss. It is bad enough to have a pet PTS anyway, but these circumstances must have been especially traumatic. You did your very best for him in a really difficult situation and he was obviously a much loved bunny who had a happy life with you.
