Timmy's eye ulcers U/D 23/05 back from vet

Timmy's ulcers both seem to have returned back to how they were :(, although there has been no treatment change. I am still continuing with everything just now, in the hope that they will calm down again.

The good news is that Timmy still seems much happier :). He has his eyes open a lot still, so I assume he is still getting good pain relief. I think the main goal is going to be to keep him comfortable, and deal with any problems from the ulcers when they arise.

Timmy's eyes have taken a turn for the worse, he couldn't open either eye last night :(.

He is a bit better this morning, but we have the vet this afternoon to see what else, if anything, can be done for him.

Oh im so sorry to hear this. :(

Please keep me updated & if theres anything I can do to help you know im only a short drive away!

Thinking of you & Timmy.

And give Blossom a kiss from Orla. :) xx

Will post when we get back. I'm so upset about him :(.

Oh no, poor Timmy. :( I know it's awful trying to treat the same thing over and over again. I really hope the vet can help you get a break through. Sending lots of vibes for Timmy xx

Well, we're back. No change in Timmy's eyes. My vet was concerned about his quality of life :(, until I assured him that Timmy seems fairly happy for most of the time, and often binkys around his run.

The vet is getting in touch with the specialist again to see if there is anything else he can suggest. Although we both think that it may just be a case of making sure he stays as comfortable as possible now, as nothing we have tried has had any real difference.

In the meantime Timmy is back on the Lacri-lube and continuing the Fucithalmic. He is to keep on the painkillers every 20 hours, unless his pain is bad like last night. I've to bring his dose forward then, as long as it is at least 12 hours since his last one.

Hi Weedug, you are doing a great job. Hes a lucky bun to be in your care!:)

Has the vet said that the condition may not improve? If so, atleast he is comfortable & content with you.

Just wanted to send him some vibes. Grim has had lots of problems with his eyes including ulcers and I know how horrible it is. :(

Thanks, but just now I just feel so upset for him :(.

Vet doesn't think he will get better :(. We have tried so many different treatments and nothing has helped. In the worst situation, Timmy will struggle too much with the pain. My vet isn't overly keen on eye removal because both eyes are affected.

My Nigel developed two corneal ulcers about 6 weeks ago. He was immediately put on Fucithalmic drops (three times a day) and Baytril (once a day) and Metacam 0.4ml twice a day. Within two weeks there was no sign of the ulcers anymore. However he has been left with a residual problem of a blocked tear duct which my vet is currently trying to treat with different ABX and drops to try and clear up any remaining inflammation/infection. Don't know if any of this helps as it seems your vet has been quite thorough, but thought I would share it with you just in case.

Vibes that they find something that helps him soon though! xx

Thanks for sharing what treatment Nigel had. Timmy's already tried them all.

Glad to hear Nigel is recovering :)

Hello
Is it possible you can post pictures of one or both ulcers. Have any tests been done to assess tear production. There is still much that can be done for these cases. How often are you giving pain relief for this rabbit
Goodluck

Have never managed to get a photo of the ulcers. My vet says they are not deep, and measure about 4-5mm by 2-3 mm, if I remember.

Timmy has been tested for dry eye, and his test was 0 for one eye, and 1 for the other, so we are assuming it is dry eye that is causing his problems. His tear ducts have been flushed and they were clear.

Pain relief is 0.8ml of meloxidyl every 20 hours, as this is what seems to suit him best.

The tear test can be unreliable in rabbits so I would be repeating this on a regular basis in any rabbit I had tentatively diagnosed dry eye
I tend to give meloxicam twice dailyfor pain relief in rabbits. Ocular disease is painful.
In cases of unrefractory ocular disease in rabbits, I use injected cephalexin as an antibiotic... its ocular penetration is better.
Topically I use chloramphenicol in rabbit eye cases again as the penetration is better.
I use spun serum from blood taken from the rabbit to help heal ulcers.
If there is no infection, I have also used tissue glue to cover the defect. This is a vet only job and needs to be carried out on an anaesthetised rabbit. The glue acts as a scaffold to help healing and falls out after 4-6 weeks. many rabbits can have a thinned basement membrane to their cornea which predisposes to ulceration.

I would suggest you consider and discuss referral of this rabbit to someone who is comfortable carrying out these procedures if your vet is not comfortable with them.

The above listed drugs are off licence. I am not commenting on your specific case to avoid treading on anyones toes, merely stating how I treat cases similar to that which you describe that are referred to me
Hope this helps.

Many, many thanks . I will run some of this past my vet. I know Timmy has had Depocillin injections, and an antibiotic eye drop (don't know which one). Maybe the ones you listed would work better.

He has had the serum drops, twice, and they made no difference.

The glue has been mentioned near the beginning, but not lately. I don't know why.

It is nice to know there are still other options :).
