Teeth grinding

Hey,

Me yet again! I think I post daily at this point. One day I will chill out honestly!

So I was sat with the bunnies for maybe 1.5 hours. Ivy was very timid and just wasn’t much in the mood for socialising. Fair enough!

Leafy has me confused. I think I can read his body language but this time...huge confusion. So he came for treats every now and then happily, then he sat in his napping spot and got in a loaf and his eyes started to close, or well, more half close. Then he started to grind his teeth...I was maybe...half a meter away? It was loud, like eating a pellet loud and kind of juicy sound as well somehow?

My bridge bunny Milly used purr before and this wasn’t like that. So naturally I’m worried he’s in pain...but he’s eating normally, he’s a really good hay eater as well. He was binky crazy last night and this morning. He didn’t looked distressed either...he was loafing and his ears were pointing up and no eye bulging. When his teeth were last checked they were good. What do you guys think? Think I’m going to book to see a vet ASAP and hope to film him if it happens again.

Rabbits wear their teeth down by a) diet b) tooth on tooth action. I believe this is what he was doing & if so its all good. Boobly does it all the time, hunkers down in a loaf & grinds.

Natural you should ask / worry though, as you know there is the pain tooth grinding & then the purring when you groom them right

As for chilling out ...I'm worse after almost 3 decades of house bunnies

Could he have been eating cecals?

It's a kind of wet grindy chew and they can be quite sneaky about going to get them as they don't like to be watched.

Blossom purrs and it's a bit grindy whereas Rodney's is a almost like a low clicking.

Or just cleaning bits of hay from his toofs. I find when mine are grinding in pain it's very loud and they get very squinty eyed as well.

I’ve just been sitting with my lion head Leo who likes nothing better than some hooman strokies and he’s constantly grinding away with his teeth. He doesn’t appear to have any pain issues and doesn’t react when I’m stroking him and gently massaging bones and things so he must be enjoying it. New bun flo also grinds her teeth when I give her gentle strokes so if your bunny body language seems relaxed then I would suggest it’s a contented reaction rather than pain.

So...I’m destined for further anxiety [emoji85] better I know now so I can mentally prepare to be a wreck...?!

I should say it was like teeth crunching type of noise. I did wonder if it could be food or something still in his mouth as it was like a wet crunchy noise and he had been eating pellets....it was just like a few minute after he had stopped munching and he seemed to be getting relaxed and assumed loaf mode...so I was pleased thinking he must feel chill, and then he was slowly closing his eyes....

Then crunch crunch........still in that relax position....

It startled me.

They are both easily spooked (as rabbits are I suppose) so I was worried about stress maybe of me being there? But at the same time, if he didn’t like me around he’d normally thump, or flick his legs...and loaf is an odd position to assume if you was stressed and in an uncomfortable environment??

I have to share this amazing news because I’m like happy dancing and crying at the same time...

Ivy flopped in front of me. Well maybe a metre away from me, with Leafy in between us. I’m not 100% sure if she knew I was in the room...I mean surely she could hear me breathing? But AMAZING!!

AND AND AND

Leafy let me pet him for the first time. It was short, maybe 4-5 pets but...[emoji24][emoji24] I have absolutely no idea what life he had before he came to me, I know his previous owner abandoned him so he was a stray...&& here he is now, learning to trust. Here they both are! Learning to trust me. I don’t deserve it!

Aww  you do deserve it, because you are taking great care to meet their needs and consider their issues

They swallow cecotrophs almost whole, sucking them a bit rather than chewing them. This is because cecotrophs are covered with a mucus that protects the nutrients they contain from being destroyed by the highly acidic environment of the stomach :)

Teeth grinding can also mean pain. I know I'm on the worst case scenario site and under the influence of Brkos situation. They hide pain so well. Observe hay consumption, swiching preferences to pellets or soft food or viceversa. A bit less activity, grumpy bun. The subtle change can indicate teeth problem or even abscess presence.

Which is precisely why I am seeing a vet! :) He is acting his normal self and eating perfectly fine but we have to be sure he has a clean bill of health [emoji4]
