  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Im sure it is up to the vet. But when money is involved, vets dont always make the right decision. Not all vets even like animals, they are more scientists than anything else, care often comes last place.

i am hoping Norbert has now left the forum, but still in my defence of my chosen future profession i hope that no-one else here things that this is true! i'd be the first to say that we often get things wrong, dont think of all the treatments possible or simply dont know enough, but i am pretty certain that most if not all vets DO care and do NOT make decisions purely on a financial basis, both in terms of the vet and the owner. as i have said on other posts, it is sad, sad fact that vet students right now get taught almost nothing about rabbits and other rodents and small animals. unless they are a specialist in the field or have completed certificates after graduation, chances are most vets in general pratice know only the "essential basics". several RU members demonstrate a FAR greater knowledge than most vets i know.

In this case Maisey sought out the advice of the top experts in the country, she could do no better. i admit in reading the posts today i did wonder whether euthanasia of all the rabbits would be an inevitable consequence, desperately sad as that may be, but i agree that you have to try to start with to see what will work and learn for the future. i think its very brave of owners to be prepared to try therapies that may not work simply in the hope that there may be some improvement. i am sure the abscesses were painful and distressing but not unduly and the right decision was made in the end.

i will try to look this up in college and ask a few clinicians but it is likely that they will not know any more than the vets at langford.
