  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spencer again

I am so sorry you lost your bunnies. This is appalling that this has even been allowed to happen, everyone makes mistakes but the so called professionals that are supposedly qualified to care for our furry friends then try to brush it under the carpet should be made to face up to their actions. Had this happened in a hospital or doctors surgery to a human being then they would be disciplined and made to face the consequences of what they had done so it should be no different just because it's an animal. :(

Good for you, the least they can do is ensure this never happens again. It's not "one of those things" especially if your boys have died of RHD2 (which unfortunately I believe they have.) Your boys have had two doses of RHDmxy (also their fault). Who are they trying to kid here?

When you have the results I would contact the vet council, maybe the rwaf can help you with your case

Sorry, I was on my phone earlier and about to go to the gym.

So her lack of concern was because she said that they have people who don't vaccinate their rabbits at all and walk through the store to get to the vets. I don't agree with her point of view, it's one thing to wait until the results of the PM come back, but now we know that Spencer had RHD, and we know that they didn't give either of our boys the RHD2 vaccination, and while I understand that the nature of the virus is that someone could bring it into the store after they've been for a walk in the woods, they know that an infected rabbit has been brought through their store, and I was wearing the same clothes that I was the night before when I had been holding Spencer so I could have easily left contaminated fur etc whilst walking through. But they are under no obligation to inform the store, and the store are under obligation, as far as I am aware, to remove their rabbits from sale until they are happy they've not been infected.

She was very quick to point out that no vaccination is 100% effective, no doubt trying to make me think that it might just be "one of those things", which will not wash. Although, she has told me that she is working with the clinical director for Vets 4 pets to work out how this was able to happen, and to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

I'm not overly fussed about the money, although I do think either the practise or the vet should cover the avoidable costs we have had for emergency vets etc, I'm not going to let this go and I will be making a huge stink about this if they try to brush anything under the carpet, or try to dodge any responsibility.

I had a feeling they wouldn't do anything about their rabbits being vaccinated, sadly :(

Your rabbits would have been protected had they been given the appropriate vaccines when you took them. Yes I agree they should cover your emergency vet fees. As we've already discussed, reporting them to the RCVS would be a starting point.

I hope you are your wife are feeling a bit better, and I hope you get full closure on your wee boys

I would advise you to contact the RWAF about this. One of the Directors may feel it to be appropriate to alert their Specialist Veterinary Advisor about the situation.

They are usually prompt at replying to emails.

I am sorry that the vets are taking this approach, as I consider that it is adding to you and your wife's distress about the whole episode :(

I don't follow or agree with her reasoning at all and, whilst I would like to be proved wrong, it suggests to me that they are in the process of trying to play down their mistake about the vaccinations.

I would have hoped that a trained vet would have displayed professionalism over and above any thoughts about blame (for want of a better word) for the practice. In my view this has now moved on from what was probably a genuine, albeit serious, error to something far more distasteful.

My thoughts exactly  I’m so sorry things are turning out this way

This was the practice manager, not one of the vets.

With the exception of the incident with the vaccinations I have always found the vets at the practice to be very professional, knowledgeable, helpful, and understanding.

However, it does feel like the corporate approach from vets 4 pets is going to be to try and avoid accepting direct blame.

My wife wants to speak to solicitors

I'm so sorry :( How distressing this is becoming for you both

Can't offer any more advice than has been given, but just wanted to add my support, so sorry that you have to go through this. Good luck to you both xxxx

Thank you all.

It has been very stressful over the last couple of weeks, but, at least now we have gotten some closure, and hopefully it won't bee too long until we get some definitive answers.

The vets called me a little while ago, they are not going to test for the strain of RHD, as they don't want to incur further costs.

However, they have accepted that they are at fault because Spencer did not receive the vaccination that was requested, and they want to know how we would like to proceed.

I have emailed the practice manager and asked fro the following:

1. A copy of the post mortem report
2. A copy of the test results from the lab
3. The name of the vet who administered the incorrect vaccines.

I think my wife an I will at least speak to a solicitor if we can get some free legal advice before we go back to vets4Pets with any requests etc.

Not a very professional decision in my view :(

Speaking to CAB or getting free legal advice if it's available would seem sensible.

I'm sorry that this continues to be so distressing for you.

Sorry, but this is outrageous to me :(

I am so sorry you are going through all this.

I have found my house legal insurance to be top notch and that's where I would begin.
I personally have not found CAB to be of benefit.

Just wanted to send some hugs and I'm so glad you are taking this further for poor Spencer and Frank. Xx
