  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

hi sorry i haven't been very active lately but i don't like to reply a lot cos i know there are loads of people on here who know better than i do anyways!

Buster has a really sore looking weepy eye and is also on Baytril for sneezes. I have some Fucithalmic eye drops left over from a few months ago, do you think it would be wrong to use it tonight before going back to the vet tomorrow? It is the same eye that was sore before. I wanna do somthing because it looks so sore but I don't want to make it worse.

Thanks xxx

Awwwwww poor Buster

I would not use the Fucithalmic as if it has been opened its no longer sterile and should be thrown away. Using it may just make things worse.
I am sure the Vet will prescribe a suitable treatment tomorrow

Good luck

Thanks Jane, glad you are here to give me advice! :D

I feel sorry for him it looks really sore. It just seems to be one thing after another with him at the moment. The first 2 years he never had a single thing wrong; the past 6 months it just seems constant! :( I can't keep up with the saving enough money to keep up with the vets bills and I only have him! Don't know how you multiple bun mums do it

You could bathe his eye area with 'cooled' boiled water, i find that this helps with kermit when his eyes get weepy.

Thank you, will do that :) Poor Buster has really been in the wars lately! And he is very cross at me cos I seem to pull him around non-stop nowadays with all his medicines and moulting and now eye cleaning! I think I can soften him up with a bit of brocolli though...

Yea I was going to suggest cooled boiled water... and cotton wool... it does help.

Did he have an eye exam with the luminous drops - at the vets? Just wondering as if he has scratched /ulcerated the surface of the eye this could still be irritating. Not sure but as the tear ducts and nose are connected maybe the sneezing is connected with the eye problem?

Just wondering, as Madam had a watery eye, and a little sniffle the other day... (no sneezes) but when I took her to the vets he found she had scratched/ulcerated the surface of her eye.. this was causing her runny nose..

It was being irritated more by the fact she has hairy carruncles (a condition usually found in short nosed breeds of dog) which means she has an extra layer of tissue inside her eye, with fine hairs on it (which were irritating the ulcer on her eye every time she blinked)

Did they get to the bottom of the cause for his sneezes?

Buster had his eye duct flushed at the vets today and nothing really came out - no gungy stuff, it was just clear. He has been given eye drops now to give 3 times a day and I have to let him know how we get on in a week. We have Genticin drops.

The sneezes are most likely recurring snuffles we think. He seems to get sneezy everytime he is a bit run down.

Doesn't help that he is a dental bun too... the only things on his head that haven't gone yet are his ears!!! *touch wood*

Poor Madam, what did they do for her eyes?

Aww Snuffles - poor mite.. glad he has got some drops to be going on with
now. Fingers crossed his ears stay well and truly healthy!

Madam had eye drops too - 3x per day the same - as she had a scratch on the surface that had ulcerated, this was why the hairy carruncles were noticed. They haven't bothered her up till now and she is 4. So the vet says unless they cause her problems she is fine with them (it's just that they are irritating the scratch so making it more painful than it would be) If they did bother her they can do an op to remove them  My vet is an eye specialist and I would trust him 100% to do it, but I don't think it's necessary at this point. He said to me "you've heard of hairy aunts, well madam has hairy carr-uncles" terrible sense of humour!

Hope your bun gets 100% well again

could it be sneezing due to allergy? i.e., unrelated to the other problems? Here's a link to other bunnies owner including me, who has sneezing bunnies. But my bun is eating like a horse daily.

It seems really hard to tell because his teeth always need checking too. He doesn't get any yellow discharge, just clear, Baytril seems to clear it up for a while like other people have mentioned on those links. I don't know what he could be allergic to, I bed him on dust extracted hay and feed him Excel.
I shall definately keep this in mind though and see how we get on

Thanks xxx
