  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Prozac ( Fluoxetine)

To add, the Rabbit has been prescribed Prozac to address behavioural problems- self mutilation. It seems to be working.

Geeze [emoji51] and the rabbit wasn't just in pain..?

I mean it'll chill you out for sure.. But Idk.. Surely there was a cause for the self mutilation?

Nope, not pain induced at all. Endless diagnostics ruled that out. The drug is used for behavioural problems in dogs. But I have no experience of it being used in Rabbits.

Prozac sure as hell didn’t chill me out, it sent me more loopy than I already am

That's really interesting! I mean if it's helping the bun, that's great.

[emoji38][emoji38] I had an impossibly dry mouth and when I didn't take it my heart started racing and I felt like I was having a panic attack, it was not good!

I had no idea that SSRIs are prescribed for bunnies- i am glad it’s helping. Is the dose very small?

I used to be on Prozac, and found it made me worse before I got better.

The Bunny is not mine so I don’t know the full details.

This is really interesting. I've never heard of it being prescribed to animals per se. I'd be interested to know more about it. I can only add my own human experience to the pot. It was in the early 1990s and a horrible experience. I remember feeling very conned as at the time it was touted as a new wonder drug!

I was prescribed it in the early 90s too. It really did knock me for six. I remember not being able to sleep and also for feeling like I wanted to jump off a cliff. Soon after it was found that one possible side effect is suicidal ideation  Not helpful if you are already depressed !!

I've not heard about it in rabbits but I'm sure I have in other animals, I guess from some of the vets' posts on Twitter, but I couldn't tell you what pets they were. I recall when i was a GP Admin (early 2010s) we had a lot of problems of (not with exactly!) people on the wrong anti-depressant for two weeks or whatever it was as we all worked through the protocols on which one to prescribe! Wonder if that's the same for animals?
