Post Dental Care U/D Still worried

Mad Bunster

Mama Doe
Hiya
Poor Foz had to have a dental yesterday after going off her food on Sunday. All day Sunday she would only drink water or very watery mushed up pellets and only when I held a syringe or bowl to her mouth.

She came out of GA fine (was worried as she is 51/2) but she is still only drinking water and very liquidy pellets when I'm there to assist. She had metaclop and metacam at vets. Shes had maybe a few springs of Parsley on her own accord overnight, and some hay but not much else.

Just needed to know how much I need to syringe into her - water and food wise. She is still inside to keep her warm and so i can monitor her input and output - but would she be better in familiar surroundings now (shes an outdoor bunny).

She may prefer to be in a familiar environment but you will need to keep a very close eye on her. She would need extra bedding and a Snugglesafe to insure she is warm enough. The Metacam will only last 24 hours. Sometimes a Dental can make the Bun's teeth extra sensitive for a couple of days in which case more analgesia would help.
As long as she is eating/drinking a little and pooing I would not syringe feed her as that will just stress her out and stop her wanting to eat for herself.
Offer her the foods she will eat and give her a bowl of cooled boiled water too.

Hopefully once she is back in her own environment she will feel more settled and will start to eat more. If not then I would speak with the Vet who may suggest more medication.

:)

Thanks Jane,
When I'm syringe feeding her, I literally just have to hold the syringe beside her mouth and she takes it, so its not a "force feed". I can hold a bowl to her too and she'll eat from that, just not on her own accord.

So should stop this for now and see if she eats for herself?

She had a dental about 3 years ago and sat upset all night and only ate once she was back with her sister - but she does seem more relaxed this time.

I have Metacam at the CAT strength - do you know the dosing rate for this?

here's the dosage for dogs' metacam

dosage (in ml) = weight in KG x 0.1 / 1.5

1.5 is for dogs

in your case, I can't remember what it is for cat, so substitute the 1.5 w/ the cat's no.

say that number is 1 mg/ml instead of 1.5 mg/ml, and say your bun weighs 2 KG

Then dosage (in ml) for cat's metacam will be:

dosage (in ml) = 2 x 0.1 / 1 = 0.2 ml

So just a bit of metacam will do.

Get her some veggies, fruit, spoil her for the next 24 to 48 hr. You can also force feed her w/ some non-meat Heinz baby food for the next 24 hr. (I don't like critical care, they smell bad and tastes bad)

You do need to speak with the Vet before giving her more Metacam. Its a POM and I am not qualified to say its OK.

I would get her back to her normal environment and see if she starts to eat for herself. If she has not eaten anything in the next 2-3 hours I'd give the Vet a call re the Metacam and also offer Foz some more syringe feed so as her tum does not become empty.
Some Ranitidine may also be helpful. Its an anti GI ulcer med (POM) . When a Buns tum has been quite empty GI ulceration is a possibility. The use of Metacam will add to the risk.

Good luck :)

Thank you both - I'll take her out to her husbun now and see how things go. Wish i had a webcam - that would be so much easier to watch them! They do get suspicious when i sit and stare!

I know what you mean !! I have had to use strategically placed mirrors at times so as I can look at a particular Bun without them knowing

Mirrors...Genius Idea!

Well Fozzie wants grass, grass and more grass.... so I've been out in the garden with my scissors looking a right weirdo as I search for the tastiest looking grass blades!
She had some mint leaves too, so I'm off to the shops for more herbs to tempt her.

Give her a big snuggle from and if I can be of any help just shout. Think she would be better with Archie though.
Just thought 'Rich Tea' biscuit she snatches them out of your hand when she is here with me:D

But YES YES YES to aunty Kays:lol::lol::lol:

But Kay, can you supply her with some, erm, you know, Grass?? I might know someone who knows someone who can get some, if you're interested?

She seems alot perkier by the way.. hoping she'll eat some veg tonight.

I have a fella who grows ermmmm Grass from his own garden when his bun comes to board as she loves their errrrr;) well you know what I mean:lol::lol:

Post Dental Care U/D High Temp & not really eating

Well, Foz still isn't quite right, still not got her appetite back nearly 2 days after the dental. Shes got a very high temperature (105 i think vet said) and very little gut sounds. Her mouth and tounge looked fine. I've got more metaclopromide and baytril to inject later on.

Just given her some more herbs which she nibbled at but then stopped, but I'll go cut some more grass for her see if she'll have that.

I've no idea whats going on so please send some thoughts for my little Fozzie..

OK 4 days now since Fozzies dental and I'm still not happy with her progress. She has had 2 days of Metaclopromide injections and yes, although it has improved her appetite, I'm not convinced shes ok yet?

I know her guts are working ok now as there are poos in her tray and she has properly formed ceceal pellets (although not eating them all). She was eating with a bit more gusto, but is now a bit more picky. I don't know if its because she is feeling better and she is now getting cheesed off with me medicating her and waving food in her face, that she is on the defensive? When i feed them - she goes and hides in their box.

I'm sure she is eating hay as i've seen her doing this and the huge pile of green oat hay (early xmas present) has certainly gone down! But I did give her a syringe feed (although not force fed) this morning just so I KNOW she is having something.

She had a high temperature on wednesday morning, so shes also on Baytril for an infection.

What else can I do now - apart from wait for the antibiotics to start to work? I'm thinking of separating the two so I can be sure that she is eating but this stresses them out and this in itself will effect her.... I'm at a loss and getting quite worried now.

As it is the weekend tomorrow and you are still worried, I would contact the vet again to be on the safe side.

You could separate them for a couple of hours so you can monitor her. I find that my two are better together as they pinch food from each other and in turn encourages the other to eat.

My only other suggestion is to get all types of herb, kale, spinach, carrot tops etc to try to help the appetite.

I hope she is better soon.

My new vets are open weekends so thats not a problem now. When we saw the vet on Wednesday he said to expect "an improvement" with the appetite by today and then "more normal" by end of the weekend.

I've got her on kale, parlsley (flat and curly), rocket, watercress, mint and grass. She will take a couple of sprigs of one and then leave it....I then offer something different and she'll have a few sprigs, but then turns her back on me.

I'm getting vibes that the turning away is more of a "get off me" than a "I'm not hungry"..... suppose I'm just frustrated that shes not better yet and that we don't know what the infection is. :(

This certainly isn't like Foz, you better tell her if she doesn't start eating properly then she won't be able to come for her holidays to me (that should do it:D) Give her an extra big snuggle and I have her rich tea waiting for her:D

Is your vet a rabbit savvy specialist? How old is your bun? It looks like your bun is having post dental complication.

I would tempt her diet w/ treats, like dry pineapple, greens, fruits etc. to induce her to eat more.
