Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Piriton - tablets or syrup?

I need to get some Piriton for Odin but I'm wondering if the syrup is safe and might be easier to get into him than tablets? He is pretty good at taking liquids in raspberries, but not sure he'll be the same with tablets, and from experience I know they are really bitter!

He needs 2mg bi daily.

I’d check with your Vet as the Syrup contains alcohol, albeit in a minuscule amount. It doesn’t contain Xylitol though, which is the usual problem when considering giving paediatric human meds to animals, so it’d probably be OK

The tablets contain lactose and Rabbits are lactose intolerant, so theoretically I guess that would need to be considered. Again the amount will be minuscule so may be irrelevant.

Has your vet suggested this? Mine worked out the child's piriton dosage for my rabbit, which is the liquid and very easy to give :)

Yes of course, I wouldn't try it without their reccommendation or approval :) She said tablets but I can't see him being happy to chew them, they taste awful, and are so tiny that crushing them runs the risk of losing a lot. I'll give it a go, he might surprise me! He needs to take it himself, I haven't yet found anything that he will accept by syringe that I could hide it in. Maybe I can sneak a tablet into a blueberry.

So you have used the syrup? There isn't a child's piriton and an adult's there is just syrup and tablets, but the syrup can be taken younger than the tablets. I can work out the amount from the dosage we need.
