  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Parasite protection?

Mine aren't, I treat if/when they show symptoms.

Worming I would never do regularly as the wormer is the only treatment for EC and the last thing I want is for them to have built up a resistance should they ever need to be treated. Plus panacur does not work as a preventative, only as a cure. So routine worming is kind of pointless!

As for fleas, mites ect it is so rare for them to get them, especially fleas normally a bun will only have fleas is a dog or cat with fleas lives with them, in which case I'd treat the dog/cat! Plus the treatment is quite harsh chemicals, I'd rather not put that on my buns if I don't need to!

(I once saw a dog spot on treatment strip gloss paint!)

What Hele said :)

We've had bunnies my whole life and I never have had an issue with any kind of parasites, thankfully. Even when we've had horrible flea infestations with the cats/dogs, the fleas haven't gotten on the buns.

Pretty much what I thought, but saw conflicting info. My buns previous owner mentioned he was fully regularly against parasites and I haven't kept this going as didn't think it was necessary.

It was playing on my mind though!
