  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mini lop owners...

Have any of your mini lops had problems with their tear ducks? Dillon's had runny eyes for a few weeks now and when I took him to the vets she said it can be common in lops, especially mini lops because of the shorter squashed faces/bone structure. His teeth were checked and were fine so I have some drops and if they don't work after 10 days he has to have them flushed - bless him!

Yes, Barley (although more dwarf lop size) has problems with one of his eyes, he has recently been on drops and had them flushed, and although it is "better" is is not 100%. It seems to be worse during the harsh winter months. I did't know it was a breed thing.

Has anyone got any more info?

Nor did I but the vets said that his breed have very short faces/bone structure which puts more pressure on the tear ducks? I actually thought Dillon was maybe allergic to the dust in straw so moved him onto vet bed but now its in both eyes so knew it couldn't be that.

I know my breed of cats are prone to teeth problems because of their breed and bone structure in their face so I guess it makes sense.

lops and lionheads and nethies sometimes are generally more prone to dental problems, and therefore also tear duct problems due to the smaller and "squashed faces" and bone structure.

Yup. Miffy had tear duct trouble in the summer when it got really hot - she had them flushed and then she was on eye drops for a couple of weeks. The vet said that one of them was unusually narrow.
