Litter tray filling question / suggestion

MaxAndMolly

Young Bun
Hi all,

We put litter trays in the hutch for Max and Molly a few months back, and they instantly adopted them (clever and very good bunnies!!)

At first we lined with paper and then a bit of hay. And that was fine, but a bit messy.

Then I tried using the wood pellet type of cat litter from PAH, again with some hay on top. That worked even better. But it isn't cheap.

So then I asked at the specialist horse suppliers where I get our bales of hay (and also now great big bags of cheap sawdust for the hamster). They also stock big bags of the Burgess Excel pellets we use at a good price. They said they also had wood pellets. I have to confess that I'd used a whole bag of them - cos they looked just the same as what I'd had from PAH - and rebought before I realised that the product (Fethabed) is actually a kind of dehydrated horse bedding. So its intended use is for spreading on stable box floor and hosing with water to create a soft bedding. (Apologies to horse people who knew all this already). ... Anyway, it is doing the job just fine. They use the litter trays. I've never seen any evidence that they even dig down below the hay layer I always put in. The pellets absorb all the wee - and although they're not marketed as odour absorbing or anything, they keep everything clean and without any pongs. We change the trays every couple of days. And the cost is a lot cheaper than using the PAH stuff.

So - firstly anyone want to chip in and tell me this is a really bad idea for some reason I don't know?

And if not, may I recommend this to anyone wanting a suggestion for cheaper litter tray filling? (Unless anyone has any even better ideas!)

Thanks.

PS - If you're in the Guildford area, my supplier is Frosburys - originally recommended by someone on here for the hay. But now pretty much replaced our need to go to Pets at Home at all!

I have no idea about the wood pellets thing.
I use aubiose which is a horse bedding (hemp ) and its compressed in a bag,,,about £9 a bag and last for ages...ive got three buns. and three litter trays I tend to use in different places.

Thanks Chelle.

I'll stick with the pellets for now (I think I bought about a three month supply last time I went to Frosburys!) But when they run out, I might take a look at your suggestion.

If anyone else has any thoughts on this, let me know. Or if anyone else decides to give it a try, let me know how it works for you.

It sounds fine as long as they are not eating it....which is difficult to know really...
I saw mine eating other litter tray stuff I put down..newspaper...megazorb...all sorts so was really pleased when I got aubiose...lol

Hopefully others will comment unless no one else has ever use what you using..lol

I use dust free Cat Pellets, then we had hay on top and some of their old poo's which gets them using it.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to stick with the pellets. It means I have to grab a handful of Evening Standards or Metros less often when I'm passing through a London station! :)

After reading your thread I decided to look into horse bedding as newspaper and hay works fine for me but it is bulky and I finish up filling around 40 black bags per week! I do have one or two rabbits! Anyway the lady at the animal feeds shop said you have to dampen the horse pellets first so I didn't like that idea then she said they had some Aubiose in, which they never used to get, so I have come home with a bag of that and it seems very good.

... Hi Tonibun. I don't dampen the horse pellets. (The instructions say you do ... but that's to turn it into its intended use as horse bedding. Max and Molly kind of take care of the dampening themselves! ;) ) But I've not heard of this Aubiose stuff. So maybe I'll ask at the shop next time and give that a try too. I'm persisting in the belief that I've stumbled on my own genius solution for now! :) :)
