MaxAndMolly
Young Bun
Hi all,
We put litter trays in the hutch for Max and Molly a few months back, and they instantly adopted them (clever and very good bunnies!!)
At first we lined with paper and then a bit of hay. And that was fine, but a bit messy.
Then I tried using the wood pellet type of cat litter from PAH, again with some hay on top. That worked even better. But it isn't cheap.
So then I asked at the specialist horse suppliers where I get our bales of hay (and also now great big bags of cheap sawdust for the hamster). They also stock big bags of the Burgess Excel pellets we use at a good price. They said they also had wood pellets. I have to confess that I'd used a whole bag of them - cos they looked just the same as what I'd had from PAH - and rebought before I realised that the product (Fethabed) is actually a kind of dehydrated horse bedding. So its intended use is for spreading on stable box floor and hosing with water to create a soft bedding. (Apologies to horse people who knew all this already). ... Anyway, it is doing the job just fine. They use the litter trays. I've never seen any evidence that they even dig down below the hay layer I always put in. The pellets absorb all the wee - and although they're not marketed as odour absorbing or anything, they keep everything clean and without any pongs. We change the trays every couple of days. And the cost is a lot cheaper than using the PAH stuff.
So - firstly anyone want to chip in and tell me this is a really bad idea for some reason I don't know?
And if not, may I recommend this to anyone wanting a suggestion for cheaper litter tray filling? (Unless anyone has any even better ideas!)
Thanks.
PS - If you're in the Guildford area, my supplier is Frosburys - originally recommended by someone on here for the hay. But now pretty much replaced our need to go to Pets at Home at all!
