Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Large deep scratch on rabbit ear

MPAT

New Kit
Morning all,
Hope you and rabbits are all well.
I have 2 rabbits, Dora and Nugget, both sisters are 13 months old. We have noticed when Dora sheds, we see clumps of fur everywhere. She is shedding at the moment, but over the weekend, my daughter noticed a cut on her ear. We bought some anti inflammatory cream from Pets at Homes called Tea Tree Skin cream. Dora is allowing me to apply it on her ear. However, this morning when I looked at it the cut is bigger, going higher up on her ear, I'm not sure if it is a cut or part of the fur shedding? I asked at the vet yesterday and she said if she is acting normal then she will be fine. I do not see any sign of mites and her sister looks fine, just Dora's ear. Tried to attach photo but couldn't see how I can.
Thank you all in advance.

Personally, I woudn't put anything on the ear - she may be more irritated by trying to get the cream off, and causing more damage. It's ok to bathe in saline (salty water) or with dilute hibiscrub, then dry the area carefully. Once clean & dry, it's usually best left alone. If it doesn't look right after a day or two, she will need a vet to look at it. Rabbits usually heal quite quickly, although they do have very thin skin which is easily damaged.

Are you grooming them both? Use a fine tooth (dog) comb to remove the loose fur, especially when they are mouting. It stops them ingesting it (which can cause blockages) and makes less mess in their living area. It may also stop them scratching out the loose fur, which could be why the ear is scratched.
