  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Balding baby

Debbieann

New Kit
Hi so I’ve noticed my baby has got some balding and fur missing. Mum had been biting her and she had some scabby areas. Now the scabs are coming off so is her fur. It’s all on her back. Should I be concerned IMG_4222.jpeg

How old is the baby ?

Kits are weaned by 8 weeks and Mum needs a break and she should be separated away from them at 8-10 weeks. Stress and fighting can occur if the Mum is being pestered for prolonged suckling, kept in overcrowded accommodation or when Kits are a lot older and hitting puberty. If kits remain with Mum right up until puberty you are going to get inbreeding, fighting and all the consequent problems that come with that.

As the wounds were scabbed they clearly involved broken skin. This can mean risks of infection getting into the wounds which can lead to abscesses. Have the Rabbits been Vet checked recently ? I hope so if there were wounds that resulted in scab formation.

Are you in the UK ? If so then the Kits need to be vaccinated with Nobivac Myxo RHD Plus which can be given from the age of 5 weeks.
