i think i am jumping the gun!?

Mama Doe
I went into pets at home today and there large double cage is on offer. i am thinking of getting a new cage to bond my 2 does together. Then getting my dad to somehow conect there cages to it when they are bonded. so they will have a large double decker and a chicken run type on each side....anyway while i was looking a man came over so i told him my plans. he said had i tried the rabbits together? he did say that they will be better spayed and i explained that they were outdoor rabbits and i was waiting till spring cause i cant bringthem in till spring...1 or 2 nights would be ok but not a couple of months. Icame home and thought about it and because ive housed them so that they can see each other all the time i thought i'd try it.......
just off my utility room i have a toilet and i tried them in there together,,i think it went ok?? for the first minute they ignored each other and then bunny tried mounting miffy. i clapped my hands and they huddled together in a corner. i stroked each of them. they just sat huddled for about 10 mins but i was so nervous i put them back in their cages.......now i am worried ive made a mistake, but they have been next to each other now for about a year.
could i have them spayed now, bring them in for a few days and then back out? i could leave the window open in the room they will be kept in until they go back out or is this too much of temp changes?

sorry for the long winded post.......

Hi ya, I can't really offer you too much help, but funnily enough, I am in pretty much same situation as you. I have spoken to a lady about having my two girls bonded, who have been next to each other in separate cages for a while, and she advised me that I would definitely need them both spayed first. They're both now done, and will start the bonding in a couple of weeks when the wounds are healed and the hormones have calmed down.

I would strongly recommend getting them spayed as soon as you can, and you should be able to start the bonding a couple of weeks after, provided their wounds have healed nicely.

Just re-read that and realised I didn't say anything about your question of bringing them in - presumably you mean bringing them in to keep them warm after their op?

I'm not sure how long they would need to be in for - my two are house bunnies, so I didn't really have that worry, just turned the heating on for them during the day while I wasn't there.

Hopefully someone with more experience than me will be along soon to help you with that question! :)

Firstly I woudn't advise putting them together again until they are spayed. Humping is normal behaviour so I would expect that but if they do decide to kick off because their hormones are all over the place it could make it difficult for you to bond them once they are spayed.

I'm pretty sure it is the first 24hrs after GA that they cannot regulate their temperature so keeping them in overnight shouldn't cause them any adverse effects when they go back outside. I would probably opt for an unheated room tho so they don't get cold after the GA but also don't get too warm so that its a huge change when they do go back outside. I'd also make sure they have extra bedding as a precaution.

thankyou for the advise.....my vets has a nurse who specialises in rabbits but she wasn't there today so i am going to ring her on monday and see what she says. i am not going to try them again until there done cause i dont think my nerves will take it! thanks again.:)

I would wait until after the spey as the change in routine around speying might break the bond. Is it the Primrose cottage hutch you have been looking at? On offer at £119? We have this and it is fine for two smallish bunnies. Also if they do start scrapping (as ours have), you can remove the ramp, block the hole and have one bunny upstairs and the other downstairs.

Hi,my giant has just been done and i kept him in for 2 nights in a cool room with no heating then he went back out and was fine:D

yes it is that hutch....it looks quite big,, buti have room to give them alot of space so its either that and their runs joining it or a shed and a run..at the moment the cage is winning because of the money side of it.

Going outside after op

I have just had one of my rabbits neutered, they say that their temperature doesn't regulate when they have been under anaesthetic but this is only short term. I would get them neutered, pick them up from the vets and let them have one evening inside and then put them outside the following morning with loads of hay and a cover to readjust and they should be fine. That's what I always do and they always seem fine with that. If you keep them in too long, they will get used to the higher temperature and it will be harder to put them outside. After one of mine has been operated on, I just keep a closer eye on them for a couple of days and make sure their home is nice and cosy.
